Little Fort
Little Fort is a small community on the west bank of North Thompson River in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is some north of Kamloops, British Columbia, Kamloops. The community is located at the junction of British Columbia Highway 5, Highway 5 and British Columbia Highway 24, Highway 24 in British Columbia, Canada. The Interlakes Highway, as Highway 24 is also known, runs west to meet British Columbia provincial highway 97, Highway 97 at 93 Mile House, British Columbia, 93 Mile House; it is also known as the Little Fort Highway. The Little Fort Ferry crosses to the east bank of the river. A small fort was established on the East side of the river in the 1840s as a stopping point on the HBC Brigade Trail from the Cariboo to Kamloops. Traces of the trail remain in the Eakin Creek canyon. This settlement was established by Paul Fraser in 1850 and abandoned in 1852. Before 1935, Little Fort post office was known as Mount Ollie. Kamloops, British Columbia
Kamloops ( ) is a city in south-central British Columbia, Canada, at the confluence of the South flowing North Thompson River and the West flowing Thompson River, east of Kamloops Lake. Little Fort Ferry
The Little Fort Ferry is a cable ferry across the North Thompson River in British Columbia, Canada. It is situated at Little Fort, British Columbia, Little Fort, about north of Kamloops, British Columbia, Kamloops. Technically, the ferry is a reaction ferry, which is propelled by the Current (stream), current of the water. An overhead Wire rope, cable is suspended from towers anchored on either bank of the river, and a "traveller" is installed on the cable. The ferry is attached to the traveller by a bridle cable. To operate the ferry, rudders are used to ensure that the pontoons are angled into the current, causing the force of the current to move the ferry across the river. The ferry operates under contract to the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation, is free of toll (road usage), tolls, and runs on demand between 0700 and 1820. 93 Mile House (officially 93 Mile) is an unincorporated community in 100 Mile House (outside edge of) the South Cariboo region of British Columbia, Canada. It is at the junction of Highway 24 and Highway 97. It is located approximately 11 km (7 mi) south of 100 Mile House. 93 Mile House was the name of a roadhouse built to serve travellers on the Cariboo Road during the Cariboo Gold Rush. British Columbia Provincial Highway 97
Highway 97 is a major highway in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is the longest continuously numbered route in the province, running and is the only route that runs the entire north–south length of the British Columbia, connecting the Canada–United States border near Osoyoos in the south to the British Columbia–Yukon boundary in the north at Watson Lake, Yukon. The highway connects several major cities in BC Interior, including Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, and Dawson Creek. Within and near these cities, Highway 97 varies from a two-lane highway to a freeway with as many as six lanes. Some remote sections also remain unpaved and gravelled. British Columbia Highway 24
Highway 24, also known as the Little Fort Highway or the Interlakes Highway, is a east-west connection between the Cariboo Highway, just south of 100 Mile House, and the Southern Yellowhead Highway at Little Fort. It practically provides a "second-chance" route to travellers heading east from Vancouver who missed the route to the northern part of the province or toward Edmonton. Although a rural gravel road did exist between 93 Mile House and Little Fort previously, construction under the Highway 24 name on the modern route did not begin until 1974. A dirt highway was open by 1977. Paving and auxiliary feature installation was complete by 1981. British Columbia Highway 5
Highway 5 is a north–south route in southern British Columbia, Canada. Highway 5 connects the southern Trans-Canada route (Highway 1) with the northern Trans-Canada/Yellowhead route (Highway 16), providing the shortest land connection between Vancouver and Edmonton. Despite the entire route being signed as part of the Yellowhead Highway, the portion of Highway 5 south of Kamloops is also known as the Coquihalla Highway while the northern portion is known as the Southern Yellowhead Highway. North Thompson River
The North Thompson River is the northern branch of the Thompson River, the largest tributary of the Fraser River, in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It originates at the toe of the Thompson Glacier in the Premier Range of the Cariboo Mountains, west of the community of Valemount. The river flows generally south through the Shuswap Highland towards Kamloops where it joins the South Thompson River to form the main stem Thompson River.
