Little Clatskanie River
The Little Clatskanie River is a short tributary of the Clatskanie River in Columbia County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It begins near Sarafin Point in the Northern Oregon Coast Range northwest of St. Helens and flows generally north to meet the larger stream near the unincorporated community of Apiary. The mouth of the Little Clatskanie is about from the main stem Clatskanie's confluence with the Columbia River. The Little Clatskanie has no named tributaries. The map includes mile markers along the Clatskanie River. According to ''Fishing in Oregon'', the entire Clatskanie system supports a population of resident cutthroat trout. Klaskanine River
The Klaskanine River is a tributary of the Youngs River, approximately long, in northwest Oregon in the United States. It drains a small section of the Coast Range in the extreme northwest corner of the state in the watershed of the nearby Columbia River. It rises in three short forks in the mountains in central Clatsop County, in the Clatsop State Forest north of Saddle Mountain State Natural Area. The Middle Fork joins the North Fork, which then joins the South Fork. The combined stream flows generally northwest and enters the Youngs River from the east approximately south of Astoria. Columbia County, Oregon
Columbia County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,589. The county seat is St. Helens. History The Chinook and Clatskanie Native American peoples inhabited this region for centuries prior to the arrival of Robert Gray, captain of the ship ''Columbia Rediviva'', in 1792. The Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled and camped along the Columbia River shore in the area later known as Columbia County in late 1805 and again on their return journey in early 1806. Columbia County was created in 1854 from the northern half of Washington County. Milton served as the county seat until 1857 when it was moved to St. Helens. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names. Clatskanie River
The Clatskanie River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a timber-producing area in the foothills of the Northern Oregon Coast Range north-northwest of Portland. It rises in eastern Columbia County, approximately west of St. Helens on the northern slopes of Bunker Hill. Major tributaries include Carcus Creek and the North Fork of the Clatskanie, which converge at Swedetown. The North Fork rises at Apiary. It flows generally north-northwest through the Clatsop State Forest, past Clatskanie. The Clatskanie River converges with Conyers Creek and Beaver Creek near Clatskanie and then it enters a slough on the Columbia from the south approximately east of Westport. Apiary, Oregon
Apiary is an unincorporated community in Columbia County, Oregon, United States, that takes its name from a post office established by David M. Dorsey. The post office operated from August 28, 1889, until March 24, 1924. It is reported that Dorsey was a beekeeper, which provided the source of the name for the Post Office and thus the community. The community was served by Apiary School District #38, which operated a two-room school providing education services for grades 1 through 8. When operational, it operated in conjunction with the Rainier Union High School District which provided education services for grades 9 through 12. (The high school district also included a number of other grade school districts in the area: Delena, Hudson, Fern Hill, Rainier, Goble, Shiloh Basin, and Neer City districts. Cutthroat Trout
The cutthroat trout is a fish species of the family Salmonidae native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean, Rocky Mountains, and Great Basin in North America. As a member of the genus '' Oncorhynchus'', it is one of the Pacific trout, a group that includes the widely distributed rainbow trout. Cutthroat trout are popular gamefish, especially among anglers who enjoy fly fishing. The common name "cutthroat" refers to the distinctive red coloration on the underside of the lower jaw.
