Lithuania is a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the member state of Lithuania. It is currently represented by eleven Members of the European Parliament. European Parliament Constituency
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected by the population of the member states of the European Union (EU). The European Electoral Act 2002 allows member states the choice to allocate electoral subdivisions or constituencies (, , , ) for the European Parliament elections in several different ways. Most EU countries operate a single national constituency which elects MEPs for the whole country. Belgium and Ireland are each subdivided into constituencies, with electoral results calculated separately in each constituency. Germany, Italy and Poland are each subdivided into electoral districts, with the number of representatives determined at the national level after each election in proportion to the votes cast in each district. Vilija Blinkevičiūtė (born 3 March 1960 in Linkuva, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian lawyer and politician, Member of the European Parliament and former long-term Minister for Social Security and Labour. Blinkevičiūtė is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania since 2006. Early life and education Blinkevičiūtė was born in Linkuva, Lithuania. After graduation with honours from Linkuva Secondary School, she entered Law Faculty of the Vilnius State University, from which she graduated in 1983, having obtained the qualification of Master of Laws. Zigmantas Balčytis
Zigmantas Balčytis (born 16 November 1953 in Šilutė district municipality) is a Lithuanian politician who briefly served as acting Prime Minister of Lithuania in 2006. He took office on 1 June 2006 following the resignation of Algirdas Brazauskas, but failed to be approved by the Parliament to become Prime Minister. He was succeeded on 4 July by Gediminas Kirkilas. Balčytis was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania until 2021 and was Minister of Finance in the Brazauskas government from 2005 to 2007. Viktor Uspaskich (russian: Виктор Викторович Успасских, lt, Viktoras Uspaskichas; born 24 July 1959) is a Russian-born Lithuanian entrepreneur and politician. Early life He was born in the village of Urdoma, Arkhangelsk Oblast in what was then the Russian SFSR. He was born into a family of forestry workers. He graduated from Urdom high school in 1976. From 1977 to 1979, he served in the Soviet Army. After the army, he continued to work in the construction of gas pipelines. He arrived in the Lithuanian SSR in 1985 and worked as a welder in the gas industry. 2009 European Parliament Election In Lithuania
The 2009 European Parliament election in Lithuania was the election of the Members of the European Parliament, delegation from Lithuania to the European Parliament in 2009. It was a part of the wider 2009 European Parliament election. The Homeland Union (European Peoples Party) doubled their representation from 2 to 4, whilst Labour Party (Lithuania), Labour shrank from 5 to 1. Eugenijus Maldeikis
Eugenijus Maldeikis (born 27 August 1958, in Anykščiai) is a Lithuanian politician. Maldeikis served twice as Lithuanian Minister of Economy, during Paksas Cabinet I in 1999, and as part of Paksas Cabinet II from 2000 to 2001. His second stint as economics minister overlapped with his tenure on the Eighth Seimas of Lithuania which began in 2000. From 2003, the Seimas appointed Maldeikis a Lithuanian observer to the European Union. After the death of Rolandas Pavilionis, Maldeikis replaced him as a member of the European Parliament from 18 May 2006 until 2009. While serving on the European Parliament, Maldeikis represented the Lithuanian Liberal Democratic Party within the Union for Europe of the Nations parliamentary group. Rolandas Pavilionis (July 3, 1944, Šiauliai – May 10, 2006, Vilnius) was a Lithuanian philosopher, politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Liberal Democratic Party; part of the Union for a Europe of Nations. Biography In 1962 Pavilionis graduated from a night-school for workers in Šiauliai. He attended the school at night after finishing his work at a bicycle factory. The same year he was admitted to the Vilnius University to study foreign languages. In 1968 he graduated the university with a degree in philology. From 1968 to 1971 he continued postgraduate studies at the Science Academy of Ukraine and earned doctor's degree in logic. Pavilionis then returned to Lithuania and joined Vilnius University as member of the faculty (1971–1977 docent, 1982–1990 professor).
