Saltaire is a model village in Shipley, West Yorkshire, Shipley, a Ward (electoral subdivision), ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The village contains 93 Listed building#England and Wales, listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Of these, one is listed at Grade I, the highest of the three grades, four are at Grade II*, the middle grade, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. In 1850 Titus Salt started to build a textile mill, known as Salts Mill, Salt's Mill, alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and then developed the model village to house and serve its workers. This included housing, shops, and community buildings, all of which are listed. The architects for the entire scheme, including later mills, were the Bradford architects Henry Francis Lockwood, Lockwood and William Mawson, Mawson. Saltaire is a Victorian era, Victorian model village in Shipley, West Yorkshire, Shipley, part of the City of Bradford Metropolitan District, in West Yorkshire, England. The Victorian era Salt's Mill and associated residential district located by the River Aire and Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. History Saltaire was built in 1851 by Titus Salt, Sir Titus Salt, a leading industrialist in the Yorkshire woollen industry. The name of the village is a combination of the founder's surname and the name of the river. Salt moved his business (five separate mills) from Bradford to this site near Shipley, West Yorkshire, Shipley to arrange his workers and to site his large textile mill by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the railway.
