The Nikolaj Contemporary Art Center ( da, Nikolaj Kunsthal, formerly (from 2006 - 2010) ''Kunsthallen Nikolaj'' and (until 2006) ''Nikolaj Udstillingsbygning'') is an arts centre in Copenhagen which occupies the former St. Nicholas Church ( da, Sankt Nikolaj Kirke), named after Saint Nicholas, one of the city's oldest churches and most conspicuous landmarks. It is situated on Højbro Plads, a few steps away from Amagertorv and Strøget. The church building is noted for its fanciful Neo-Baroque long spire. The tower offers some of the best views of the city centre. History The original church building was constructed in the early thirteenth century near Copenhagen's shore of the Øresund. In 1530, the Lutheran theologian Hans Tavsen (1494–1561) preached the first Lutheran sermon within Copenhagen in St Nicholas Church. Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers is a hotel in the Ørestad city area of Copenhagen. It is renowned for being the first hotel in Denmark that generates all of its power from renewable sources. Location The Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers is located in the southern part Ørestad South area of Ørestad, lying just south of the Øresund highway. Design and construction The Copenhagen-based practice Dissing+Weitling, as well as Norman Fosters studio in London were responsible for designing the hotel. It was constructed by Sjælsø. The furniture was bought from Paustian House and many eco-friendly solutions were integrated into the hotel construction. The construction started in 2007 and ended in 2009. The hotel opened on 16 November that same year. The Church of the Holy Spirit (Danish: Helligåndskirken) in Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the city's oldest churches. History Background The first abbey in Copenhagen was a Franciscan monastery founded in 1238, just 12 years after the death of Francis of Assisi. Prior to that, Archbishop Eskil had founded two Cistercian monasteries, Esrom Abbey and Herrevad Abbey. Typically for the order, they had been founded at more remote locations in Northern Zealand and Skåneland. The Church of Our Saviour ( da, Vor Frelsers Kirke; ) is a baroque church in Copenhagen, Denmark, most famous for the external spiral winding staircase that can be climbed to the top, offering extensive views over central Copenhagen. It is also noted for its carillon, which is the largest in northern Europe and plays melodies every hour from 8 am to midnight. History When Christian IV planned Christianshavn in 1617, it was intended as an independent merchant's town on the island of Amager and it therefore needed a church. A temporary church was inaugurated in 1639 but construction of the present Church of Our Saviour, the design of Lambert van Haven, did not start until 1682. The church was inaugurated 14 years later in 1695 but important interior features like the altar had a notoriously temporary character and the tower still had no spire.
