Both females and males can practice ballet; however, dancers have a strict hierarchy and strict gender roles. Dores André
Dores André Rodríguez (born 1985) is a Spanish ballet dancer. She is currently a principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet. Early life André was born in Vigo, Spain, to a professor and a doctor. When she was eleven, she was sent to a small ballet studio at her hometown. Two years later, she was spotted by Maria de Avila at a competition, and joined her school in Zaragoza, which is eight hours away from Vigo. When she was seventeen, she was supposed to compete in the Prix de Lausanne, but had to withdraw after she broke her leg. She considered going to college instead but ultimately chose to pursue a career in ballet. Career André briefly danced in a company in Florence, Italy. Maniya Barredo
Josephine Carmen Imutan Barredo (born November 19, 1951), known professionally as Maniya Barredo, is a Filipina ballet dancer and instructor. She is best known as the first and only Prima ballerina of the Philippines, an honor that was declared in 1978. She performed for the Joffrey Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and the Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. She has taught at the Mount Dora School of Ballet and is the Founder and Director of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre. She has been described as the “technical trump card” of the Hariraya Ballet Company. Irina Mikhailovna Baronova FRAD (; 13 March 1919 – 28 June 2008) was a Russian ballerina and actress who was one of the Baby Ballerinas of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, discovered by George Balanchine in Paris in the 1930s. She created roles in Léonide Massine's ''Le Beau Danube'' (1924), ''Jeux d'enfants'' (1932), and ''Les Présages'' (1933); and in Bronislava Nijinska's ''Les Cent Baisers'' (1935). Melania Ballish Regueiro (née Lopez) is the artistic director of The Classical Ballet Centre in Summerville, South Carolina, USA. Career A retired Prima Ballerina. Regueiro won the Bronze in the prestigious Brasilia International Dance Competition in 1992. She left home at the age of 14 to join the Cuban National Youth Ballet Company. In 1995 she moved to Germany, joining the Volkstheater Rostock under the direction of Itchko Lazarov. Caroline Baldwin (born 1990) is an American ballet dancer who is currently a principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen. Baldwin was raised in Chicago, Illinois. She attended her first ballet class at age 11, and later trained at the Faubourg School of Ballet, while attending high school, and attended summer intensives at Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet School, School of American Ballet in New York City and The Royal Ballet School in London. Bai Shuxiang (; born 1939) is a Chinese dancer and former prima ballerina, known for her role in the early development of professional ballet in China. After training at the Beijing Dance School as a teenager, Bai was appointed principal dancer of the newly formed Central Ballet Ensemble in 1958, becoming the first Chinese dancer to perform the role of Swan Queen in ''Swan Lake''. In 1964, Bai danced the lead role in ''Red Detachment of Women'', premiering a new "revolutionary model" of contemporary Chinese ballet, and proceeded to dance in a number of other Chinese productions. Elisa Badenes is a Spanish ballet dancer who is currently a principal dancer at the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany. Early life Badenes was born in Valencia, Spain. She started ballet at Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Valencia at age 11. In 2008, after competing at the Prix de Lausanne, she trained at The Royal Ballet School for a year with a scholarship.
