Budh Sabha
Budh Sabha is a weekly literary workshop on Gujarati poetry held on every Wednesday since 1932. It is currently presided by writer Dhiru Parikh and held at Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, Ahmedabad. History During the Indian independence movement, Umashankar Joshi, Sundaram and Ramprasad Shukla used to go to office of ''Kumar'' magazine at night and used to discuss their poetry. During the same time, a photography club called Niharika used to gather there every week. Shivram Bhatt, a member of Niharika, suggested weekly poetry workshop on the same line. So the weekly Budh Sabha, literally Wednesday meet, was established in 1932 by Bachubhai Ravat, then editor of ''Kumar'' magazine. It used to be held at the office of ''Kumar'' at Raipur Chakla in Ahmedabad. Niranjan Bhagat
Niranjan Narhari Bhagat (18 May 1926 – 1 February 2018) was an Indian Gujarati language poet and commentator who won the 1999 Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati language for his critical work ''Gujarati Sahiyta – Purvardha Uttarardha''. He was also an English poet, and had written over a hundred poems in English, most being written in the style of ''Gitanjali''. Early life Niranjan Narhari Bhagat was born on 18 May 1926 in Ahmedabad. He completed M.A. in English Literature in 1950. Career Bhagat joined L. D. Arts College as a lecturer. Later he joined Saint Xavier's College, Ahmedabad, as a professor of English in 1975 and served there until his retirement. He served as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 1997–98. He also served as a member of Advisory Board for Gujarati, Sahitya Akademi, Delhi, from 1963 to 1967. Yoseph Macwan
Yoseph Macwan (born 20 December 1940 – 25 December 2022) was a Gujarati poet and critic from Gujarat, India. He was also well known for his contribution in Gujarati children's literature. Biography He was born on 20 December 1940 at Ahmedabad to Philip and Mariyam. His family belonged to Malawada village near Nadiad. Due to family constraints, he worked as a helper in Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service after SSC but he was underpaid thus he decided to continue studies. He completed B. A. in Gujarati in 1968, M. A. in 1970 and B. Ed. in 1975 from Gujarat University. He regularly attended Budh Sabha. He joined Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya, Ahmedabad as a teacher in 1963 and served there until his retirement. He ran ''Vaishakhi'' bimonthly for three years. Yogesh Joshi (poet)
Yogesh Joshi ( Gujarati: યોગેશ જોશી) is a Gujarati language poet, short story writer, novelist, and editor from Gujarat, India. He is an editor of Parab, a publication of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. His significant works include ''Avaajnu Ajavalu'' (1984; Collection of poems), ''Samudi'' (1984; Novel), ''Motiba'' (1998; Biography) and ''Adhakhuli Baari'' (2001; Collection of Short stories). He was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak award for his book ''Motiba''. Early life Joshi was born on 3 July 1955 in Mahesana, Gujarat to Bhanuprasad Joshi and Anilabahen Joshi. He completed his schooling from G.D. High School Visnagar in 1971. He received his B. Sc. from M.N. College, Visnagar in 1974 and M. Venibhai Purohit
Venibhai Jamnadas Purohit (1916-1980) was Gujarati poet, lyricist, short story writer and journalist. Life Venibhai was born on 1 February 1916 in Jamkhambhaliya. He completed his primary education in Bombay and secondary education in Bombay. He joined ''Be Ghadi Moj'' for sometime in Bombay. He proof read in ''Prabhat'' daily, Bhartiya Sahitya Sangh and Sastu Sahitya in Ahmedabad from 1939 to 1942 . He participated in Quit India Movement in 1942 and was jailed for ten months. He worked with ''Prajabandhu'' and ''Gujarat Samachar'' from 1944 to 1949. He worked with ''Janmabhoomi'' daily from 1949 until his death. He died on 3 January 1980 at Bombay. Umashankar Joshi
Umashankar Jethalal Joshi () (21 July 1911 – 19 December 1988) was an Indian poet, scholar and writer known for his contributions to Gujarati literature. He wrote most of his works in Gujarati. Biograpy Early years Umashankar Joshi was born to Jethalal Kamalji and Navalbai in a small village named Bamna (now in Bhiloda Taluka of Aravalli district, Gujarat). He had eight siblings including six brothers and two sisters. Umashankar Joshi's father, Jethalal who worked as a Karbhari of several Jagirs, wanted his sons to get an English education. In 1916, Joshi started his education at Primary school in Bamna and spent two years in 4th standard due to the absence of the teacher for a long time. Upon learning this Jethalal joined Joshi in Sir Pratap High School of Idar, Gujarat, Idar. Tribhuvandas Luhar
Tribhuvandas Purushottamdas Luhar, better known by his pen name Sundaram, (22 March 1908 – 13 January 1991), was a Gujarati poet and author from India. Life He was born on 22 March 1908 at Miyan Matar, Bharuch, Bombay Presidency, British India. He completed his primary education in local school of Matar and five grades in English medium at Amod, Gujarat. Later he studied at Chhotubhai Purani's Rashtriya New English School, Bharuch. He graduated in languages from Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad in 1929. He started teaching in Gurukul at Songadh. He participated in Indian independence movement and was imprisoned for some time. He was associated with Jyotisangh, the women's organisation in Ahmedabad, from 1935 to 1945. He was introduced to Sri Aurobindo in 1945, and he moved to Pondicherry. Ravji Patel (Gujarati: રાવજી પટેલ; 15 November 1939 – 10 August 1968) was a modernist poet, short story writer and novelist of Gujarati language. Life He was born in Bhatpur village (now in Anand district, Gujarat) on 15 November 1939. His family was a native of Vallavpura village in Kheda district. He completed his primary education from his village, Vallavpura and moved to Ahmedabad for further education. He completed his S.S.C. from Navchetan High School, Ahmedabad. Then he joined City Arts College, but he could only study up to the second year of college and dropped out owing to financial difficulties. He worked briefly at various places like mills, libraries, newspapers and universities. Rajendra Anantrai Shukla (born 12 October 1942) is a Gujarati poet. He taught at various places before voluntarily retiring. He published several poetry collections which won him several major Gujarati literary awards. Life He was born on 12 October 1942 in Bantwa village near Junagadh, Gujarat, India. His family is native of Wadhwan. He completed his primary education from Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Bantwa and Majevadi. He completed his secondary education from Junagadh and Ahmedabad. Rajendra Shah (author)
Rajendra Keshavlal Shah (28 January 1913 – 2 January 2010) was a lyrical poet who wrote in Gujarati. Born in Kapadvanj, he authored more than 20 collections of poems and songs, mainly on the themes of the beauty of nature, and about the everyday lives of indigenous peoples and fisherfolk communities. In his poems using Sanskrit metrics, he was influenced by Rabindranath Tagore. He is considered one of the giants of post Gandhi-era in Gujarati literature. Among his various professions, Shah was also a publisher in Mumbai, where he launched the poetry magazine ''Kavilok'' in 1957. The press itself became an important Sunday meeting-place for Gujarati poets. Apart from writing poetry, Shah also translated into Gujarati Tagore's poetry collection ''Balaaka''; Jayadeva's ''Gita Govinda''; Coleridge's ''The Rime of the Ancient Mariner''; and Dante's ''The Divine Comedy''.
