List Of Members Of The Election Committee Of Hong Kong, 2017–21
This is the list of members of the Election Committee (Hong Kong), Election Committee elected in the 2016 Hong Kong Election Committee Subsector elections, 2016 Election Committee subsector elections. It serves from 2017 to 2021 and is responsible for electing the Chief Executive of Hong Kong in the 2017 Hong Kong Chief Executive election, 2017 election. By March 2017, there is a total number of 1,194 members in the 1,200-strong Election Committee, in which one is vacated in the Import and Export subsector and two vacated in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, Legislative Council due to the 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council candidates' disqualification controversy, disqualification of two Legislative Council members, as well as three overlapped memberships of Martin Liao, Ma Fung-kwok and Michael Tien who are both Legislative Council members and Hong Kong deputies of the National People's Congress. Election Committee (Hong Kong)
The Election Committee is a Hong Kong electoral college, the function of which is to select the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Chief Executive (CE) and, since 2021, to elect 40 of the 90 members of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, Legislative Council. Established by Annex I of the Basic Law of Hong Kong which states that "the Chief Executive shall be elected by a broadly representative Election Committee in accordance with this Law and appointed by the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Central People's Government (State Council)." It is formed and performs its selection function once every five years, even in the event of a CE not completing their term. The membership of the Election Committee was expanded to 1,500 under the 2021 Hong Kong electoral reform, massive overhaul of the electoral system in 2021. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) is a pro-Beijing conservative political party in Hong Kong.
