Founded in 2000 by Jim Weidner, K2JXW, the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS) is devoted to maritime communications, amateur radio, lighthouses, and lightships. Galibi, Suriname
Galibi is a resort in Suriname, located in the Marowijne District. Its population at the 2012 census was 741. Galibi is a tribal area inhabited by an indigenous population of Kalina Amerindians. The town of Alusiaka used to be located near the banks of the Marowijne River. The Dutch West India Company was given 500 hectares to grow coconuts; but, because of their mistreatment of the workers, the town was abandoned. In 1871 a 60-metre lighthouse was built near the entrance of the Marowijne; it was operated until 2012. Christiaankondre The village of Christiaankondre is located along the estuary of the Marowijne River. Together with neighbouring Langamankondre, it is often referred to as Galibi. ''Suriname-Rivier'' is a lightvessel permanently berthed in a wet dock in the Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam Open-Air Museum in Nieuw-Amsterdam, Commewijne, Suriname. Paramaribo District
Paramaribo is a district of Suriname, encompassing the capital city of Paramaribo and the surrounding area. Paramaribo district has a population of 240,924, almost half the population of the entire country, and an area of 182 km2. The area was first colonised by the British in the 17th century with the construction of Fort Willoughby. This fort was later taken by the Netherlands and renamed Fort Zeelandia. The area, and the city of Paramaribo, switched between Dutch and British control until the Treaty of Breda at the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War ceded all of Suriname to the Dutch. Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam
Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam is a fort in Suriname built from 1734 to 1747 at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. It is open to the public as an open-air museum. History The necessity of improving the fortifications of the colony of Suriname was underscored when French buccaneers under the leadership of Jacques Cassard attacked the colony in 1712. Fort Sommelsdijk, which was situated further upstream the Commewijne River at its confluence with the Cottica River was fortified for this purpose in 1715, but it was clear something more substantial needed to be done to defend the colony against foreign attacks. It was eventually decided to build a new fort at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. When Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam was completed in 1747, Fort Sommelsdijk was downgraded to a military outpost. Between 1863 and 1967, the fort was used as a prison. It is the capital city of the Nickerie district, and the terminus of the East-West Link.
