List Of Extinct Animals
This page features lists of extinct species, organisms that have become extinct, either in the wild or completely disappeared from Earth. In actual theoretical practice, a species not definitely located in the wild in the last fifty years of current time is textually called "extinct". Extinction
Extinction is the termination of a kind of organism or of a group of kinds (taxon), usually a species. The moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of the species, although the capacity to breed and recover may have been lost before this point. Because a species' potential range may be very large, determining this moment is difficult, and is usually done retrospectively. This difficulty leads to phenomena such as Lazarus taxa, where a species presumed extinct abruptly "reappears" (typically in the fossil record) after a period of apparent absence. More than 99% of all species that ever lived on Earth, amounting to over five billion species, are estimated to have died out. It is estimated that there are currently around 8.7 million species of eukaryote globally, and possibly many times more if microorganisms, like bacteria, are included. Notable extinct animal species include non-avian dinosaurs, saber-toothed cats, dodos, m ...

List Of Extinct Bird Species Since 1500
Around 129 species of birds have become extinct since 1500, and the rate of extinction seems to be increasing. The situation is exemplified by Hawaii, where 30% of all known recently extinct bird taxa originally lived. Other areas, such as Guam, have also been hit hard; Guam has lost over 60% of its native bird taxa in the last 30 years, many of them due to the introduced brown tree snake. Currently there are approximately 10,000 living species of birds, with an estimated 1,200 considered to be under threat of extinction. Island species in general, and flightless island species in particular, are most at risk. The disproportionate number of rails in the list reflects the tendency of that family to lose the ability to fly when geographically isolated. Even more rails became extinct before they could be described by scientists; these taxa are listed in List of Late Quaternary prehistoric bird species. The extinction dates given below are usually approximations of the actual d ...

List Of New Zealand Species Extinct In The Holocene
This is a list of New Zealand species extinct in the Holocene that covers extinctions from the Holocene epoch, a geologic epoch that began about 11,650 years before present (about 9700 BCE) and continues to the present day. New Zealand proper includes the North Island, South Island, offshore islands, and outlying islands like the Chathams. The Realm of New Zealand also includes Tokelau (a dependent territory); the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing states in free association with New Zealand); and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica). Only New Zealand proper is represented on this list. For extinctions in dependent territories see the List of Oceanian animals extinct in the Holocene. All listed extinctions likely occurred after the human settlement of New Zealand, which was among the last places on earth that humans settled. The first settlers of New Zealand migrated from Polynesia and became the Māori people. According to archeo ...

List Of Hawaiian Animals Extinct In The Holocene
This is a list of Hawaiian species extinct in the Holocene that covers extinctions from the Holocene epoch, a geologic epoch that began about 11,650 years before present (about 9700 BCE) and continues to the present day. The Hawaiian Islands include the eight major islands (the Windward Islands) and the small islands and atolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. They are all part of the U.S. state of Hawaii, except Midway Atoll, which is a separate U.S. territory. Hawaii was settled by Polynesians sometime between 1000 and 1200 CE. British explorer James Cook, the first known non-Polynesian to arrive at the archipelago, arrived in 1778. An influx of European and American explorers, traders, and whalers arrived shortly after. Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and became a state in 1959. Numerous species have disappeared from Hawaii as part of the ongoing Holocene extinction, driven by human activity. Human contact, first by Polynesians and later by ...

List Of Australian Species Extinct In The Holocene
This is a list of Australian species extinct in the Holocene that covers extinctions from the Holocene epoch, a geologic epoch that began about 11,650 years before present (about 9700 BCE) and continues to the present day. Most Australian megafauna disappeared in the Late Pleistocene, considerably earlier than in other continental landmasses. As a result, Australian Holocene extinctions generally are of modest size. Most extinctions occurred after the European settlement of Australia, which began with the First Fleet in 1788 CE. However, the thylacine (''Thylacinus cynocephalus'') was extirpated from mainland Australia about 2,000 or 3,000 years ago. The Norfolk swamphen also disappeared before 1788. Mammals (class Mammalia) Order Dasyuromorphia Thylacine (family Thylacinidae) Bandicoots and bilbies (order Peramelemorphia) Bandicoots (family Peramelidae) Bilbies (family Thylacomyidae) Pig-footed bandicoots (family Chaeropodidae) Order Di ...
