Estonia
Estonia, formally the Republic of Estonia, is a country by the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia. Hans Rebane
Hans Rebane ( – 16 December 1961) was an Estonian politician, diplomat and journalist. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia from 1927 to 1928 in Jaan Tõnisson's third cabinet. Rebane was Estonian envoy in Helsinki 1931–1937, 1937–1940 in Riga. Hans Rebane was born in Ärma farmstead, Halliste Parish (now in Veskimäe, Viljandi Parish), Viljandi County. The same farm is now owned by the former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves who uses it as his residence. Hans Rebane studied medicine in the University of Tartu and later economics in Berlin. Aleksander Warma
Aleksander Warma Cross of Liberty (Estonia), VR I/3 (also Varma; – 23 December 1970) was an Estonian navy officer, diplomat and painter. Biography Aleksander Warma studied at marine schools of Käsmu and Narva, took a deep sea captain's exam in Riga. In 1920, he took the high school exams to the examination committee of the Tallinn Teachers' Seminar. 1920–1924 studied at the dept. of the law of Tartu University, graduated with the 1st-degree diploma, 1928 Master of Law. Member of Estonian Students' Society. In World War I, he served in the Russian Baltic fleet. In Estonian War of Independence, he served in the Estonian Navy, was chief of staff of navy in 1919–1920. August Traksmaa was born as August Traksmann in the manorial estate in Põlula village, Kreis Wierland (now in Vinni Parish), in the Governorate of Estonia. Otto Strandman
Otto August Strandman ( – 5 February 1941) was an Estonian politician, who served as prime minister (1919) and State Elder of Estonia (1929–1931). He was one of the leaders of the centre-left Estonian Labour Party, that saw its biggest support after the 1919 and 1920 elections. Strandman was a key figure in composing the radical land reform law and the 1920 Constitution. He also served as Minister of Agriculture (1918–1919), Minister of Justice (acting 1918; 1920–1921), Minister of Finance (1924), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1918, 1920–1921 and 1924) and Minister of War (1919). While he was holding the office of the Minister of Finance, he stabilized the economy and managed to avoid hyperinflation. Karl Selter (24 June 1898 in Koeru, Estonia – 31 January 1958 in Geneva, Switzerland ). Julius Seljamaa
Julius Friedrich Seljamaa ( in Sindi – 17 June 1936 in Tallinn) was an Estonian politician, diplomat and journalist. From 1933 to 1936, he was the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was born in Sindi, Pärnu County. He studied from 1899 to 1902 in Riga and became a teacher and later director at a school in Taali from 1902 until 1909. From 1909 until 1914, he worked at a school in Rakvere. He then moved to Saint Petersburg to study law and work as a journalist. He graduated in 1918. After that he began his diplomatic career shortly after the independence of Estonia in February 1918. Together with Johan Laidoner he became the Estonian representative to the Soviet Union and participated in the negotiations of the Treaty of Tartu in 1919 and 1920. August Torma
August Torma (born ''August Schmidt''; 19 February 1895 – 12 March 1971) was an Estonian military officer, minister and diplomat. A veteran of the Estonian War of Independence, Torma was awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle, 1st Class, in 1936. Early life August Torma was educated at St. Petersburg University, then attended Vladimir Military Academy. Military career Torma was mobilized into the Russian Imperial Army during World War I and served as an officer. He was seriously injured in Galicia in 1917 and subsequently became a prisoner of war in Austria. He eventually returned to Estonia in 1918 after a prisoner exchange via Denmark. Torma was attached to the British expeditionary force as the Estonian representative during the North Russia Campaign, serving in the area of intelligence.
