List of Susquehanna River crossings proceeding upstream from the river mouth at the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, United States, generally northward through Pennsylvania toward the main branch headwaters in New York. The West Branch crossings are listed afterward. This list includes active road, railroad, foot, and trail bridges, dams, fords, ferries, and historic crossings. Presently it does not include historic ferry crossings. Railroad lines are generally as shown on the USGS topographic maps, which may not have been updated to reflect the creation of Conrail in the 1970s, which absorbed many lines in this area. The Philadelphia Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The line runs from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, southwest to Baltimore, Maryland, along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) line. At its north end, CP Park (Park Junction), in Brewerytown, Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Subdivision becomes the Trenton Subdivision. The south end of the Philadelphia Subdivision is near Bay View Yard, where the Baltimore Terminal Subdivision begins. CSX Susquehanna River Bridge
The CSX Susquehanna River Bridge is a railroad bridge that carries CSX's Philadelphia Subdivision across the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville, Maryland, via Garrett Island. It was built in 1907-10 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) on the same alignment as an 1886 B&O bridge. Like its predecessor, it was the longest continuous bridge on the B&O system. History 1866-1884: PW&B Bridge The 1866 completion of the nearby Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore (PW&B) railroad bridge allowed trains between Baltimore and Philadelphia to cross the Susquehanna without the aid of a ferryboat for the first time. The B&O used trackage rights on the PW&B to operate trains to Philadelphia and Jersey City starting at about this time. Hatem Bridge
The Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge is a road bridge in northeast Maryland that crosses the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville via Garrett Island. It carries U.S. Route 40. It is the oldest of the eight toll facilities operated and maintained by the Maryland Transportation Authority, and the southernmost automotive bridge across the Susquehanna. It is named for Thomas J. Garrett Island (Maryland)
Garrett Island is an island located in Cecil County, Maryland, from the mouth of the Susquehanna River, directly west of Perryville and north of Havre de Grace. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The island is crossed by the CSX Susquehanna River Bridge on the north side and the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge on the south side. U.S. Route 40 or U.S. Highway 40 (US 40), also known as the Main Street of America, is a major east–west United States Highway traveling across the United States from the Mountain States to the Mid-Atlantic States.
