Lisa Murkowski
Lisa Ann Murkowski ( ; born May 22, 1957) is an American attorney and politician serving as the senior United States senator for Alaska, having held that seat since 2002. Murkowski is the second-most senior Republican woman in the Senate, after Susan Collins of Maine. She became the dean of Alaska's Congressional delegation upon Representative Don Young's death. Murkowski is the daughter of former U.S. senator and governor of Alaska Frank Murkowski. Before her appointment to the Senate, she served in the Alaska House of Representatives and was elected majority leader. She was controversially appointed to the Senate by her father, who resigned his seat in December 2002 to become governor of Alaska. Mike Gravel
Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel ( ; May 13, 1930 – June 26, 2021) was an American politician and writer who served as a United States Senator from Alaska from 1969 to 1981 as a member of the Democratic Party, and who later in life twice ran for the presidential nomination of that party. Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, by French-Canadian immigrant parents, Gravel moved to Alaska in the late 1950s, becoming a real estate developer and entering politics. He served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1963 to 1967, and also became Speaker of the Alaska House. Gravel was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1968. As a senator, Gravel became nationally known for his forceful, but unsuccessful, attempts to end the draft during the War in Vietnam, and for putting the ''Pentagon Papers'' into the public record in 1971. 1968 United States Senate Election In Alaska
The 1968 United States Senate election in Alaska took place on November 5, 1968. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Ernest Gruening ran for a second full term in office but finished behind Speaker of the Alaska House of Representatives Mike Gravel in the Democratic primary. Gruening launched an write-in bid for the seat in the general election, but finished third to Gravel and Republican former Anchorage mayor Elmer Rasmuson. Gravel would later lose the primary in 1980 to Gruening's grandson Clark. This would be the first of 3 times where the incumbent holder of Alaska's Class 3 U.S. Senate seat was defeated in the primary while running for re-election. Future Senator Ted Stevens also ran in the Republican primary, but lost to Rasmuson by around 1,000 votes. Republican U.S. Senator Ted Stevens was appointed on December 24th, 1968 following the death of Bob Bartlett in the middle of his second term. The 1966 United States Senate election in Alaska was held on November 8, 1966. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Bartlett was re-elected to a third term in office in a landslide, defeating Republican dentist Lee McKinley in a rematch of their 1960 race. Bartlett would not complete the term, dying in office on December 11th, 1968, following complications after heart surgery. The 1960 United States Senate election in Alaska was held on November 8, 1960. Despite Republican Presidential candidate Richard Nixon defeating John F. Kennedy in the state by a close margin, popular incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Bartlett was re-elected to a full term in office, defeating Republican dentist Lee McKinley. Bartlett was considered unbeatable within the state, having support from both Democrats & Republicans. Dentist Lee McKinley defeated Lawrence Brayton, a leader in the minor Alaska Party before the race, in the primary, with Brayton endorsing McKinley and becoming a campaign manager for the south-central district. The party did not provide much support to McKinley, who also did not campaign personally. McKinley pledged to stand against socialism and excessive federal intervention and spending.
