Ted Stevens
Theodore Fulton Stevens Sr. (November 18, 1923 – August 9, 2010) was an American politician and lawyer who served as a U.S. Senator from Alaska from 1968 to 2009. He was the longest-serving Republican Senator in history at the time he left office, though his record was later surpassed in January 2017 by Utah Senator Orrin Hatch. He was the president pro tempore of the United States Senate in the 108th and 109th Congresses from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2007, and was the third U.S. Senator to hold the title of president pro tempore emeritus. He was previously Solicitor of the Department of the Interior from September 1960 to January 1961. Stevens served for six decades in the American public sector, beginning with his service as a pilot in World WarII. Gene Guess
Walter Eugene Guess (December 30, 1932 – March 13, 1975) was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, Guess graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1955, Guess graduated from the College of William & Mary. He served in the United States Army as an artillery officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In 1959, Guess received his law degree from University of Virginia School of Law. He worked as an attorney for the United States Department of the Interior and settled in Anchorage, Alaska. He then practiced law in Anchorage. From 1965 to 1973, Guess served in the Alaska House of Representatives and was a Democrat. He served as speaker of the house in 1971. In 1972 and 1974, Guess campaigned for the United States Senate and lost the elections. Guess died of an aneurysm at the Baranof Hotel in Juneau, Alaska while on a business trip. Bob Bartlett
Edward Lewis "Bob" Bartlett (April 20, 1904 – December 11, 1968), was an Alaska politician and a member of the Democratic Party. A key fighter for Alaska statehood, Bartlett served as the Secretary of Alaska Territory from 1939 to 1945, in Congress from 1945 to 1959 as a Delegate, and from 1959 - his death in 1968 as a U.S. senator. He was opposed to U.S. involvement in Vietnam, along with his fellow Senator Ernest Gruening, and also worked to warn people about the dangers of radiation. Many acts bare his name, including a major law known as the Bartlett Act, mandating handicap access in all federally-funded buildings. Bartlett was born in Seattle, Washington, to Edward C. and Ida Florence (née Doverspike) Bartlett. Bartlett's elder sister, Doris, insisted on calling the young Bartlett 'Bob', which became a name which stuck for life. 1972 United States Senate Elections
The 1972 United States Senate elections coincided with the landslide re-election of Republican President Richard Nixon. Despite Nixon's landslide victory, Democrats increased their majority by two seats. The Democrats picked up open seats in Kentucky and South Dakota, and defeated four incumbent senators: Gordon Allott of Colorado, J. Caleb Boggs of Delaware, Jack Miller of Iowa, and Margaret Chase Smith of Maine. The Republicans picked up open seats in New Mexico, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, and defeated one incumbent, William B. Spong Jr. of Virginia. After the elections, Democrats held 56 seats, and Republicans held 42 seats, with 1 Conservative and 1 independent senator in the chamber as well.
