1966 United States Senate Election In Alaska
The 1966 United States Senate election in Alaska was held on November 8, 1966. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Bartlett was re-elected to a third term in office in a landslide, defeating Republican dentist Lee McKinley in a rematch of their 1960 race. Bartlett would not complete the term, dying in office on December 11th, 1968, following complications after heart surgery. Ted Stevens would be elected to succeed Bartlett, and would serve for 40 years in the U.S. Senate. This was the last time until 2008 that a Democrat was elected to Alaska's Class 2 Senate seat. Bob Bartlett
Edward Lewis "Bob" Bartlett (April 20, 1904 – December 11, 1968), was an Alaska politician and a member of the Democratic Party. A key fighter for Alaska statehood, Bartlett served as the Secretary of Alaska Territory from 1939 to 1945, in Congress from 1945 to 1959 as a Delegate, and from 1959 - his death in 1968 as a U.S. senator. He was opposed to U.S. involvement in Vietnam, along with his fellow Senator Ernest Gruening, and also worked to warn people about the dangers of radiation. Many acts bare his name, including a major law known as the Bartlett Act, mandating handicap access in all federally-funded buildings. Bartlett was born in Seattle, Washington, to Edward C. and Ida Florence (née Doverspike) Bartlett. Bartlett's elder sister, Doris, insisted on calling the young Bartlett 'Bob', which became a name which stuck for life. Lee McKinley
Lee Lawrence McKinley (August 22, 1906 – November 12, 1986) was an American dentist and politician. McKinley was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senator from Alaska in 1960 and again in 1966. He lost both times to incumbent Bob Bartlett. He also served one term in the Alaska Territorial House of Representatives, from 1953 to 1955. He was one of a number of Republicans elected to that legislature who only served in that legislature, due to the differing attitudes of voters in the 1952 and 1954 elections. Born and raised in Arkansas, McKinley practiced dentistry in Detroit, Michigan for over a decade before moving to the Territory of Alaska after World War II. Establishing an office in downtown Anchorage, he practiced in Anchorage for over three decades before retiring in 1981. The 1960 United States Senate election in Alaska was held on November 8, 1960. Despite Republican Presidential candidate Richard Nixon defeating John F. Kennedy in the state by a close margin, popular incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Bartlett was re-elected to a full term in office, defeating Republican dentist Lee McKinley. Bartlett was considered unbeatable within the state, having support from both Democrats & Republicans. Dentist Lee McKinley defeated Lawrence Brayton, a leader in the minor Alaska Party before the race, in the primary, with Brayton endorsing McKinley and becoming a campaign manager for the south-central district. Ted Stevens
Theodore Fulton Stevens Sr. (November 18, 1923 – August 9, 2010) was an American politician and lawyer who served as a U.S. Senator from Alaska from 1968 to 2009. He was the longest-serving Republican Senator in history at the time he left office, though his record was later surpassed in January 2017 by Utah Senator Orrin Hatch. He was the president pro tempore of the United States Senate in the 108th and 109th Congresses from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2007, and was the third U.S. Senator to hold the title of president pro tempore emeritus. He was previously Solicitor of the Department of the Interior from September 1960 to January 1961. The 2008 United States Senate election in Alaska was held on November 4, 2008. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator and former President pro tempore Ted Stevens ran for re-election to a eighth term in the United States Senate. It was one of the ten Senate races that U.S. Senator John Ensign of Nevada, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, predicted as being most competitive. The primaries were held on August 26, 2008. Stevens was challenged by Democratic candidate Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage and son of former U.S. Representative Nick Begich. On October 27, 2008, Stevens was convicted on seven charges of ethics violations and corruption. The Clerk of the United States House of Representatives is an officer of the United States House of Representatives, whose primary duty is to act as the chief record-keeper for the House. Along with the other House officers, the Clerk is elected every two years when the House organizes for a new Congress. The 1966 United States Senate elections were elections on November 8, 1966 for the United States Senate which occurred midway through the second (and only full) term of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The 33 seats of Class 2 were contested in regular elections. Special elections were also held to fill vacancies. With divisions in the Democratic base over the Vietnam War, and with the traditional mid-term advantage of the party not holding the presidency, the Republicans took three Democratic seats.
