This is a list of tennis players who have represented the New Zealand Davis Cup team in an official Davis Cup match. New Zealand have taken part in the competition since 1924. Before that, New Zealander was represented by the Australasia Davis Cup team. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Bruce Phillip Derlin (born 28 November 1961 in Sydney, Australia) is a retired tennis player from New Zealand. Derlin represented his native country at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Chris Lewis (tennis)
Chris Lewis (born 9 March 1957) is a New Zealand former professional tennis player. Lewis reached the 1983 Wimbledon singles final as an unseeded player. He won three singles titles and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 19 in April 1984. He also won eight doubles titles during his 12 years on the tour. Lewis was coached by Harry Hopman and Tony Roche. Lewis is the third (and as of 2021 the most recent) man from New Zealand to reach a major singles final, after Anthony Wilding at the 1913 Wimbledon Championships and Onny Parun at the 1973 Australian Open. David Lewis (tennis)
David Lewis (born 3 September 1964) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. He is a younger brother of 1983 Wimbledon finalist Chris Lewis and of Mark Lewis. He spent his childhood in Auckland and was educated at St Peter's College. Career Lewis and partner Tony Withers won the boys' doubles title in the 1981 Australian Open. He was a singles quarter-finalist in the boys' singles at the 1982 Australian Open and also won the New Zealand National Championships for the 18s age group that year. Most successful as a doubles player, Lewis was a runner-up in the 1990 Geneva Open with Neil Borwick. He appeared in four Grand Slam tournaments and had his best showing at the 1988 Australian Open, where he and Ivo Werner made the round of 16. Daniel King-Turner
Daniel King-Turner (born 15 May 1984) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. In total, he won eight Futures singles titles as well as two Challenger doubles titles and 10 Futures doubles titles. He also made the semi-finals of two Challenger events, Pozoblanco in 2010 and Binghamton in 2012. He was a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup team between 2005 and 2013, competing in 19 ties, and winning 24 of 41 rubbers. Alistair Hunt
Alistair Hunt (born 11 November 1972) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. Biography Hunt grew up in Christchurch and was the top ranked junior in the country at under 18s level. As a junior he competed in the boys events at all four Grand Slam tournaments. He made the doubles quarter-finals at both the 1989 Australian Open and 1990 French Open, partnering Leander Paes in the latter. On the ATP Tour he made most of his appearances at the Auckland Open, where he first competed in 1996 and featured in each of the next three tournaments. His best finish was the second round in 1998, with a win over world number 53 Daniel Vacek. He played in the main draw of one international tournament, which was the 1997 Bournemouth International. Richard Hawkes (tennis)
Richard Neville Hawkes (29 November 1940 – 6 August 2001) was a New Zealand judge and tennis player. Hawkes had a sporting background, with his father a New Zealand Universities rugby representative and his mother an all-round sportsperson from Taranaki. He was active on the international tour in the 1960s, featuring in the singles main draws of the French Open and US Open. In 1968 he represented the New Zealand Davis Cup team in a 1968 tie against Yugoslavia in Zagreb, partnering Brian Fairlie in the doubles rubber. He scored an upset win over former American Davis Cup captain Donald Dell at the 1970 New Zealand Open. A graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, Hawkes was admitted as a New Zealand barrister in 1968 and relocated to Hong Kong during the late 1970s. Steve Guy
Steve Guy (born 15 March 1959) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. Career Guy appeared in the singles draw of three Australian Opens and never progressed past the second round. He did however, in the 1989 Australian Open, win the second set against third seed Boris Becker. In doubles he competed in five Grand Slams but registered just one win, in the 1988 Australian Open, with countryman Bruce Derlin. At the 1991 Australian Open, Guy partnered Swedish great Stefan Edberg. His only ATP Tour title came in the doubles at the 1989 Heineken Open in Auckland. As a singles player he made quarter-finals at the 1988 Frankfurt Open, 1990 OTB International Open and the 1990 Benson & Hedges Open. James Greenhalgh
James Greenhalgh (born 19 February 1975) is a former professional tennis player from New Zealand. Career Greenhalgh, a doubles specialist, was born in England, but at the age of four moved to New Zealand. In his junior career he partnered countryman Steven Downs and the pair were boys' doubles champion at the 1993 French Open and 1993 Wimbledon Championships. They defeated South Africans Neville Godwin and Gareth Williams in both finals. In 1999, Greenhalgh, with partner Grant Silcock, won the Hong Kong Open. They defeated the experienced pairing of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in the semi final and won the final in a walkover, after one of their opponents, Andre Agassi, withdrew with a shoulder injury. Francis Marion Bates Fisher (22 December 1877 – 24 July 1960) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament from Wellington. He was known as Rainbow Fisher for his frequent changes of political allegiance. He was a veteran of the Boer War and an internationally successful tennis player becoming the champion, along with his mixed doubles partner, Irene Peacock, of the World Covered Court Championships in 1920. Brian Fairlie
Brian Fairlie (born 13 June 1948), is a retired tennis player from New Zealand. During his career from 1968 to 1979, he won four titles in doubles, all with the Egyptian player Ismail El Shafei, and 10 singles titles in the Open era (and at least two more in 1967). Playing career Juniors Fairlie was the 1967 Boys' Singles champion of the Australian Championships. Professional Failie's best result in a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-finals of men's doubles at the French Open in 1971 with partner Frew McMillan. A year earlier, he reached the singles quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, losing to Tony Roche.
