Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood and formerly as Bombay cinema, refers to the film industry based in Mumbai, engaged in production of motion pictures in Hindi language. The popular term Bollywood, is a portmanteau of "Bombay" (former name of Mumbai) and " Hollywood". The industry is a part of the larger Indian cinema, which also includes South Cinema and other smaller film industries. Amrit Manthan (film)
''Amrit Manthan'' (English: ''Churning for nectar'') is a 1934 Indian costume-drama film directed by V. Shantaram for his Prabhat Film Company. The film was produced simultaneously in Hindi and Marathi. The film starred Chandra Mohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Shanta Apte, G. R. Mane, Varde and Kelkar. The film was based on Narayan Hari Apte's novel ''Bhagyashree''. The Hindi translation was done by Veer Mohammed Puri, who also wrote the lyrics for the film. The narrative in ''''Amrit Manthan'''' focuses on a reformist king who bans the sacrifice of animals and humans in his kingdom. The film was tremendously successful all over the country. It ran in one Bombay theatre for thirty weeks. Prabhat's distributor, Baburao Pai, coined the term "''silver jubilee''" when "''Amrit Manthan''" completed its twenty-fifth week: a first in the Indian film industry. Sitara Devi
Sitara Devi (named Dhanlakshm; 8 November 1920 – 25 November 2014) was an Indian dancer of the classical Kathak style of dancing, a singer, and an actress. She was the recipient of several awards and accolades, and performed at several prestigious venues in India and abroad; including the Royal Albert Hall, London (1967) and at the Carnegie Hall, New York (1976). At a young age Devi met Rabindranath Tagore, who encouraged her to revive the lost Indian performing arts such as Kathak. Rabindranath Tagore described her as ''Nritya Samragni ( नृत्य सम्राज्ञी )'', meaning the empress of dance, after watching her performance when she was just sixteen years old. Some people consider her as the ''Kathak queen''. Kumar (actor)
Kumar (born Syed Ali Hasan Zaidi; 23 September 1903 – 4 June 1982), alternatively known as M. Kumar, was an Indian film producer and actor, who played character roles in Hindi cinema from early 1930s to early 1960s. He migrated to Pakistan in 1963. Personal life Kumar was born in an affluent family of Lucknow on 23 September 1903 and was fondly called "Mir Mujjan" at home. In 1939, Kumar married Jewish actress Esther Victoria Abraham popularly known as Pramila, who later went on to become the first Miss India in 1947. Before marrying her, Kumar already had a wife and children in Lucknow. In 1963, on the insistence of his extended family, Kumar left for Pakistan, much to the displeasure of his second wife, who decided to stay back in India. Like his wife, his daughter Naqi Jahan also became Miss India in 1967. Not much is known about the final decade of his life. Kumar breathed his last on 4 June 1982 aged 78. Patience Cooper was an Anglo-Indian actres, and one of the early superstars of Bollywood. She was the daughter of Phoebe Stella Gamble (born in Calcutta in 1881; daughter of John Frederick Gamble and Phoebe Stella Clement whose mother was Armenian and James Alfred Cooper. Prabhat Film Company (popularly known as Prabhat Films) was an Indian film production company and film studios founded in 1929 by the noted film director V.Shantaram and his friends.
