Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Matches have been played in all states, plus the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, as well as in New Zealand and China to expand the league's audience. Marcus Marigliani
Marcus Marigliani (born 5 December 1985) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Marigliani was selected by Essendon with the fifty-fifth pick in the 2010 AFL Rookie Draft. He was drafted from Frankston in the VFL where he was one of the most consistent performers in the league over the past couple of years, earning selection in the VFL Team of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He played a total of 98 games for Frankston during his career there. Marigliani played only the last two games of the 2010 home and away season for Essendon, and was delisted at the end of the season. Michael Hibberd
Michael George Hibberd (born 3 January 1990) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A defender, tall and weighing , Hibberd plays primarily on the half-back flank. After spending the 2008 season with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, he missed out on selection in the 2008 AFL draft, which saw him spend two seasons in the Victorian Football League (VFL) with the Frankston Football Club. Dyson Heppell
Dyson Heppell (born 14 May 1992) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Heppell won the AFL Rising Star award in his first season in 2011, and won a Crichton Medal and All-Australian selection in 2014. He has served as Essendon captain since the 2017 season. Early life Heppell participated in the Auskick program at Leongatha. He began playing football with Leongatha Football Club, and played for Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Named as Gippsland's captain for the 2010 season, Heppell also played for the Victorian Country side at the 2010 AFL Under 18 Championships, where he was named in the All-Australian team. Oakleigh Chargers
The Oakleigh Chargers is an Australian rules football club playing in the NAB League, the top statewide under-18 competition in Victoria, Australia. They are based at Warrawee Park in Oakleigh, Victoria, representing the southeastern suburban area of Melbourne. The Chargers were one of two additional metropolitan clubs introduced to the competition in 1995 as part of a plan by the AFL to replace the traditional club zones with independent junior clubs. This was to help aid in player development and the process of the AFL draft. In June 2008 the Chargers moved into a new pavilion at Warrawee Park. Alex Browne
Alex Browne (born 9 August 1992) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Browne played for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup. He was drafted by Essendon with pick 48 in the 2010 national draft and made his debut against at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in round 11 of the 2011 AFL season. He was delisted in October 2015. His father, Murray Browne, played for and in the 1980s and his mother was a cheerleader for . Browne, along with 33 other Essendon players, was found guilty of using a banned performance-enhancing substance, thymosin beta-4, as part of Essendon's sports supplements program during the 2012 season. Jay Nash (born 21 December 1985) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Career Nash began his career in South Australia, where he played for the Central District Football Club. As a young player, he played for the Nuriootpa Rover Football Club, in the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association. He was drafted by Essendon Football Club in the 2003 AFL Draft at Pick 28. In Essendon's round 16 win against in 2005, defender Andrew Welsh was unable to take his place on the field. Mark Williams (AFL Footballer)
Mark Williams (born 13 April 1983) is an indigenous former Australian rules football player who played with the Hawthorn Football Club and Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League. He was traded from the Hawks to the Bombers during the 2009 AFL trade week. Making his debut in 2002 after being drafted by the Hawks at pick 43 in the 2000 AFL Draft, Williams was originally a small forward, but coach Alastair Clarkson found that he was more useful as a full forward during the 2005 season, where he kicked 63 goals, making him the leading goal kicker of the club.
