''Diapensia lapponica'', the pincushion plant, is a plant in the family Diapensiaceae, the only circumboreal species in the genus '' Diapensia'', the others being mainly in the Himalaya and on mountains in southwestern China. This species likely became circumboreal-circumpolar rctic–alpineafter it jumped to arctic habitat from North China and Russia. The most likely candidate for ancestor is a white-flowered '' D. purpurea'' The plants grow on exposed rocky ridges that are kept free from snow by high winds. ''Diapensia lapponica'' is extremely slow and low-growing and cannot compete with plants that overtop it. The plant is very sensitive to higher temperatures (global warming a lethal problem in Sweden) and so is often in misty foggy habitat. Originally native to Eurasia and North America, the extreme lightness of its spores has led to it achieving a cosmopolitan distribution. Etymology Common bracken was first described as ''Pteris aquilina'' by Carl Linnaeus, in Volume 2 of his ''Species Plantarum'' in 1753. The origin of the specific epithet derived from the Latin ''aquila'' "eagle". In the reprint of the ''Flora Suecica'' in 1755, Linnaeus explains that the name refers to the image of an eagle seen in the transverse section of the root. ''Dennstaedtia punctilobula'', the eastern hayscented fern or hay-scented fern, is a species of fern native to eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to Wisconsin and Arkansas, and south in the Appalachian Mountains to northern Alabama; it is most abundant in the east of its range, with only scattered populations in the west. It is a deciduous fern with fronds growing to 40–100 cm (rarely 130 cm) tall and 10–30 cm broad; the fronds are bipinnate, with pinnatifid pinnules about three times as long as broad.
