List Of Washington (state) Area Codes
The U.S. state of Washington has six telephone area codes. The state initially used a single area code ( 206) until it was divided in 1957 with the creation of area code 509 to serve Eastern Washington. In 1995, 206 was split again to serve just the Puget Sound region after area code 360 was created for the remainder of Western Washington. In 1997, area code 425 was assigned to Seattle's Eastside and South Snohomish County suburbs and area code 253 for the Tacoma area, leaving 206 for just the city of Seattle, closely neighboring cities in King and Snohomish counties, and Bainbridge Island in Kitsap County. Area Code 206
Area code 206 is a North American telephone area code in the U.S. state of Washington serving Seattle and most of its innermost suburbs. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes such suburbs as Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, the islands of Mercer, Bainbridge, and Vashon, and portions of metropolitan Seattle from Des Moines to Woodway. As of January 2017, 206 was one of the last urbanized numbering plan areas in the North American Numbering Plan without an overlay area code, making Seattle one of the largest cities where calls could still be originated by seven-digit dialing. On January 28, 2017, area code 564 was activated as an overlay for most of the western portion of Washington, and ten-digit dialing became mandatory on July 29, 2017. Area Code 360
Area code 360 is the telephone area code for western Washington state outside metropolitan Seattle. It began service on January 15, 1995. The numbering plan area (NPA), which encompasses all of western Washington outside urban King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties and Bainbridge Island, was previously part of area code 206. Area codes 360 and 334 (Alabama), which began service on the same day, were the first two area codes in the North American Numbering Plan with a middle digit other than 0 or 1. The served area consists of two sections. The larger, western portion stretches from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Oregon border, while the portion on the east shore of Puget Sound stretches from the border with British Columbia, Canada, almost to Everett. Pierce County is a county in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 921,130, up from 795,225 in 2010, making it the second-most populous county in Washington, behind King County, and the 60th-most populous in the United States. Area code 253 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for a part of the U.S. state of Washington, including the area south of Seattle and of the southern Puget Sound area, centered at Tacoma and extending to include the areas around Gig Harbor, Auburn, and Roy. It also serves the western half of Pierce County, as well as southern King County. The area code commenced service on April 27, 1997, as part of a three-way split of area code 206. The other of the three is area code 425.
