Guinea-Bissau ( ; pt, Guiné-Bissau; ff, italic=no, 𞤘𞤭𞤲𞤫 𞤄𞤭𞤧𞤢𞥄𞤱𞤮, Gine-Bisaawo, script=Adlm; Mandinka: ''Gine-Bisawo''), officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau ( pt, República da Guiné-Bissau, links=no ), is a country in West Africa that covers with an estimated population of 1,726,000. It borders Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south-east. Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Kaabu, as well as part of the Mali Empire. Parts of this kingdom persisted until the 18th century, while a few others were under some rule by the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. In the 19th century, it was colonised as Portuguese Guinea. Portuguese control was restricted and weak until the early 20th century with the pacification campaigns, these campaigns solidified Portuguese sovereignty in the area. Universidade Amílcar Cabral
The Universidade Amílcar Cabral (UAC; in english: Amílcar Cabral University) is a public higher education institution in Guinea-Bissau. It is the only public university in the country. Founded in 1999 with the mission of federating the nation's various top institutions, it was abruptly closed in 2008; From 2010, it underwent a major restructuring, culminating in its resumption of activities in 2013, with the appointment of its new administrative body. In 2020, the UAC federative system consisted of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Medicine, in addition to the National School of Administration and the Guinea-Bissau Higher School of Education. The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students.
