Füreya Koral
Füreya Koral (June 2, 1910 – August 25, 1997) was a pioneering ceramics artist born into a prominent artistic family in Turkey. Known for her wall panels, Koral worked in a variety of media such as tiles and statuettes, and also created ceramic-inlaid tables and stools . She started working on ceramics after she was diagnosed with tuberculosis while receiving treatment at a sanatorium in Switzerland. A self-taught artist, her works were mostly ignored during her lifetime although she did create wood-and-ceramic furnishings for the new National Assembly Building in Ankara. Seeking to push the limits of ceramics beyond its function, she was inspired by the art of the ancient civilisations of Turkey, Mexico and East Asia, especially Japan, and her work often combines elements taken from both Western and Eastern artistic traditions. Nil Yalter
Nil Yalter (born 1938) is a Turkish contemporary feminist artist. She attended Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey and currently lives and works in Paris. Her work, which is included in many collections and museums, includes not only drawings and photographs, but also videos and performance art. In fact she is the first Turkish female video artist. Early life Nil Yalter was born in 1938 in Cairo, Egypt where she lived until the age of four. She is Turkish and later in her life became also a French national. She received her education from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey. She started painting at an early age and took dance and ballet classes. In 1956, she traveled to India on foot while practicing pantomime. She had her first exhibition of paintings inspired by this travel at the French Cultural Institute in Mumbai (Bombay) in 1957. Emel Vardar
Emel Vardar is a Turkish sculptor and painter. Biography Vardar studied in the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and at the Sculpture Museums Society Studios. She painted many sea scenes and one of her paintings was taken by the Turkish Naval Forces headquarters. She held several personal exhibitions and participated in many art festivals and fairs in other countries including the United States, China, Monaco and the United Kingdom. More recently she has worked mainly on sculpture especially following her opening a sculpture gallery. In 1993, Vardar opened the Eylul Art Gallery. Canan Tolon (born 1955) is a Turkish-born artist who now lives and works in Emeryville, California. Tolon works in the mediums of printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. She has exhibited internationally in Ankara, Istanbul, Kiev, London, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland and San Francisco. In 2010, one of Tolon's paintings, "Glitch VI" (2008) was a highlight at Sotheby's auction in Turkey, and in 2012, ''Art + Auction'' named Tolon one of the 50 Next Most Collectible Artists. Canan Senol (; née Canan Şahin; born 1970), also known by the mononym Canan, is a Turkish multidisciplinary visual artist and activist, of Kurdish ethnicity. Her artwork addresses gender stereotypes, sexuality, and politics. She utilizes a variety of mediums in her practice including craft and digital techniques. Gizem Saka (born 9 April 1978, Istanbul) is a contemporary Turkish artist and an economist. She is a senior lecturer at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, and a visiting lecturer at Harvard University, teaching art markets. Hayal Pozanti (born 1983, Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish-born artist, based in the United States. She is known for her large scale, brightly colored, seemingly abstract and geometric paintings, that represent statistical data related to human-computer interaction. Life and work Hayal Pozanti studied visual arts and visual communication design at Sabancı University in Istanbul and went on to study at Yale University, receiving a M.F.A. in painting and printmaking in 2011. Setenay Özbek (born 1961, in Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish-born artist, writer, and documentary filmmaker. Özbek is of Ubykh descent. Biography Özbek was born in 1961 in Istanbul, Turkey and she attended Erenköy Girls High School. In 1990, she graduated from Marmara University, within the Faculty of Fine Arts in the Department of Performing Arts. From 1983 to 1986, Özbek studied art informally at the "Istasyon Fine Art Academy", under the tutelage of several artists, Sabri Berkel, Hülya Düzenli, Erkan Özdilek and Ergül Özkutan.
