In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer") refers to a Bowler (cricket), bowler taking five or more wickets in a single Innings (cricket), innings. A five-wicket haul on debut is regarded by the critics as a notable achievement. As of May 2021, List of Test cricketers who have taken five wickets on debut, 159 cricketers have taken a five-wicket haul on Test match debut, out of which twenty-four were from the South Africa national cricket team. The five-wicket hauls have come against six different opponents, and the South Africans have performed this feat fifteen times against England. In cricket, a one-Test wonder is usually a cricketer who is only selected for one Test match during his career and never represents his country again. This is not necessarily due to a poor performance and can be for numerous reasons, such as injury or strong competition from other players. The term is also used in rugby. More rarely, the term may refer to a player who has played in more than one Test, but was very successful only once. George Finlay Bissett (5 November 1905 – 14 November 1965) was a South African cricketer who played in four Test matches in the 1927–28 season. He was born at Kimberley, Cape Province and died at Botha's Hill, Natal. Alf Hall
Alfred Ewart Hall (23 January 1896 in Bolton, Lancashire, England – 1 January 1964 in The Hill, South Africa) was a South African cricketer who played in seven Tests from 1923 to 1931. Alf Hall's appearances in first-class cricket were limited by his movement between South Africa and his native Lancashire due to business commitments, but he played nine times as a professional for his native county in 1923 and 1924, despite controversy as to whether he was eligible given that he had played for South Africa. However, because Hall's bowling was developed on the matting pitches then used in South Africa, he was not successful in England apart from his first two games when he took a total of sixteen wickets against the two University teams – though he did bowl with deadly effect in Lancashire League games for East Lancashire and Todmorden. Sydney Frank Burke (11 March 1934 – 3 April 2017) was a South African cricketer who played in two Test matches, one in each of 1962 and 1965. Biography Born in Pretoria, Transvaal, Burke was a middle to lower order right-handed batsman and a fast-medium right-arm bowler who played first-class cricket mainly for North Eastern Transvaal and Orange Free State between 1954 and 1968. Both of his main first-class sides competed in the weaker B section of the national Currie Cup competition, and Burke's batting and bowling success at that level did not bring recognition until, in the 1961–62 season, injuries to other bowlers and a willingness among the selectors to try new players brought him into the Test team for the third game in a five-match series with New Zealand. In cricket, a bowling analysis (sometimes shortened to just analysis, especially in the phrase innings analysis, and also referred to as bowling figures) usually refers to a notation summarising a bowler's performance in terms of overs bowled, how many of those overs are maidens (i.e. with no runs conceded), total runs conceded and number of wickets taken. The South African cricket team toured India during the 1996–97 cricket season, playing three Test matches and one One Day International (ODI).
