George Bissett (cricketer)
George Finlay Bissett (5 November 1905 – 14 November 1965) was a South African cricketer who played in four Test matches in the 1927–28 season. He was born at Kimberley, Cape Province and died at Botha's Hill, Natal. Kimberley, Northern Cape
Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. Kingsmead Cricket Ground
Kingsmead is a cricket ground in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Its stated capacity is 25,000, although grass terracing makes up part of the viewing area. The 'end names' are the Umgeni End (north) and the Old Fort Road End (south). It is the home ground of the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins. In October 2019, Hollywoodbets was announced as the naming rights sponsor to the ground, with it now being known as Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium until August 2024. Ernest Tyldesley
George Ernest Tyldesley (5 February 1889 – 5 May 1962) was an English cricketer. The younger brother of Johnny Tyldesley and the leading batsman for Lancashire County Cricket Club, Lancashire. He remains Lancashire's most prolific run-getter of all time, and is one of only a few batsmen to have scored 100 centuries in the first-class game. In Test cricket, Tyldesley went on the 1928/29 Ashes Tour, where he played in one test. He also played in four Ashes matches in England, out of 14 Tests overall which included three centuries. Career Tyldesley was born in Roe Green, Worsley, Lancashire. Bob Catterall
Robert Hector Catterall (10 July 1900 – 3 January 1961) was a South African cricketer who played in 24 Test matches from 1922 to 1931. Catterall was a right-handed batsman, usually batting in the middle order but sometimes in the earlier part of his career used as an opener, and a right-arm medium-pace bowler often used to break troublesome partnerships, though he did not take any Test wickets until the final series that he played in. Early domestic cricket Catterall was educated at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg where he was coached by the former Gloucestershire cricketer and Lord's coach Alfred Atfield. Buster Nupen
Eiulf Peter "Buster" Nupen (1 January 1902 – 29 January 1977) was a cricketer who played in 17 Test matches for South Africa between 1921–22 and 1935–36. He was born in Norway, lost an eye in a childhood accident, and was shot through both knees during the Rand Rebellion when he was 20. A deadly force for Transvaal against lesser batsmen on matting wickets during the late 1920s – by which time his bowling on these wickets had been developed into a fine art – in 1930–31 Nupen was, owing to the absence of South Africa's former captain Nummy Deane due to poor form, chosen to captain the Test team against England. Alf Hall
Alfred Ewart Hall (23 January 1896 in Bolton, Lancashire, England – 1 January 1964 in The Hill, South Africa) was a South African cricketer who played in seven Tests from 1923 to 1931. Alf Hall's appearances in first-class cricket were limited by his movement between South Africa and his native Lancashire due to business commitments, but he played nine times as a professional for his native county in 1923 and 1924, despite controversy as to whether he was eligible given that he had played for South Africa. However, because Hall's bowling was developed on the matting pitches then used in South Africa, he was not successful in England apart from his first two games when he took a total of sixteen wickets against the two University teams – though he did bowl with deadly effect in Lancashire League games for East Lancashire and Todmorden. Herbie Taylor
Herbert Wilfred Taylor (5 May 1889 – 8 February 1973) was a South African cricketer who played 42 Test matches for his country including 18 as captain of the side. Specifically a batsman, he was an expert on the matting pitches which were prevalent in South Africa at the time and scored six of his seven centuries at home. His batting was also noted for quick footwork and exceptional 'backplay'. He became the first South African to pass 2,500 Test runs and was selected one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1925. In domestic cricket, he played for Natal, Transvaal and Western Province. Taylor's greatest achievement is generally reckoned to be scoring 508 runs at an average of 50.80 in the 1913–14 Test series against England, in spite of English bowler Sydney Barnes taking a record 49 wickets in the series at 10.93. English Cricket Team In South Africa In 1927–28
The England cricket team toured South Africa during the 1927–28 season, playing five Test matches against the South Africa national team and 13 tour matches under the banner of the Marylebone Cricket Club against local sides. The tour began on 12 November 1927 with a match against Western Province and ended on 21 February 1928 at the conclusion of another match against the same side. The five Tests were played between 24 December 1927 and 8 February 1928. The Test series was drawn 2–2, with England winning the first two and South Africa the last two, with a drawn Test in the middle.
