Slovenia ( ; sl, Slovenija ), officially the Republic of Slovenia (Slovene: , abbr.: ''RS''), is a country in Central Europe. Majda Sepe
Majda Sepe, born Majda Bernard, (2 July 1937 – 11 April 2006) was one of the most successful and well recognized Slovenian singers in the time of Yugoslavia and was one of the most renowned singers of the Golden Age of Slovenian folk music. Biography Early life Her mother fled the Primorska region because of Italian Fascism, her father was from Skofja Loka, a town near Ljubljana. They lived together in Ljubljana where he worked as an ambulance driver and she was a clerk. Their first child was a boy they named Marjan, who wanted a baby sister. 4 years later he also got one. Majda Bernard was born July 2, 1937 in Ljubljana. The family lived on the Ljubljana Castle. As a teenager Majda practiced ballet and expressive dance, having lessons with Meta Vidmar, because she wanted to be a singer and an actress among other things. Lara-B (born Lara Baruca, born August 1, 1979, in Koper, SR Slovenia is a singer who began her career in her early teens. Her musical style combines rock, electronic, industrial and soul. Baruca began performing in 1992. After performing at various music festivals (MMS '95, Kraška popevka '95, Slovenska popevka '99, EMA '99, MMS '99, Malta Festival '99), she turned her music aspirations mainly to concert stages. Laibach (band)
Laibach () is a Slovenian avant-garde music group associated with the industrial, martial, and neo-classical genres. Formed in the mining town of Trbovlje (at the time in Yugoslavia) in 1980, Laibach represents the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) collective, a group which Laibach helped found in 1984. "Laibach" is the German historical name for the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, itself an oblique reference to the Nazi occupation of Slovenia in World War II. From the early days, the band was subject to controversies and bans due to their elaborate use of iconography with ambiguously repugnant parodies and pastiches of elements from totalitarianism, nationalism and militarism, a concept they have preserved throughout their career. Censored and banned in Socialist Yugoslavia and receiving a kind of dissident status, the band embarked on international tours and gradually acquired international fame. Lačni Franz
Lačni Franz (meaning ''Hungry Franz'') is a rock band from Slovenia that was also popular in the 1980s in Yugoslavia. While they were inspired by another Slovenian radical band Buldožer known for utilizing sheer madness in the social and political satire, their lyrics are more self-ironic. The band was formed in Maribor in June 1979. Their name, meaning ''Hungry Franz'', is a pun on the name of a character from the novel Catch-22, Hungry Joe, and describes a hunger for rock music. The band's music and attitude were in a sense laid back, and they portrayed themselves as a local band from a provincial town. Zoran Predin's lyrics ranged from disturbing ballads ( Ne mi dihat za ovratnik, Lipa zelenela je), through love songs ( Čakaj me, Naj ti poljub nariše ustnice), to social and political satire ( Praslovan, Naša Lidija je pri vojakih). Karmen Stavec
Karmen Stavec (born 21 December 1973) is a Slovene musician and pop singer. Early years Karmen was born in West Berlin, at that time part of West Germany, to Slovene parents. After graduation she came to Domžale, Slovenia, where she joined the dance duo "4 Fun". She also began to study Germanic studies at the Philosophical Faculty at the University of Ljubljana. In 1998 she started her own solo career. Music career She has participated four times in Slovene national selection, called "EMA" for the Eurovision song contest in 1998 (with Patrik Greblo), EMA 2001, EMA 2002 and EMA 2003. Joker Out
Joker Out is a five-member Slovenian indie rock band formed in 2016, who describe their genre as 'Shagadelic Rock n' Roll.' They had represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with the song "Carpe Diem", placing 21st. Their discography includes two studio albums: ''Umazane misli'' (2021), and ''Demoni'' (2022). Career 2016–2021: Formation and ''Umazane misli'' The group was formed in May 2016 after the breakup of Apokalipsa, which included Bojan Cvjetićanin, Martin Jurkovič, Matic Kovačič and Luka Škerlep. Three of them (Cvjetićanin, Jurkovič, and Kovačič) were joined by Kris Guštin and Jan Peteh from Buržuazija, and Joker Out was born. Iztok Mlakar
Iztok Mlakar (born 21 June 1961) is a Slovenian singer-songwriter and theatre actor. Styled as the "bard of the Slovenian Littoral", he is best known for his ironic chansons in the Littoral dialect of Slovene. Together with Adi Smolar, Mlakar is among the best-known singer-songwriters in Slovenia since 1990. He was born in Postojna in western Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia), and spent his youth in the town of Nova Gorica on the border with Italy. His parents were from Cerkno, and Mlakar composed several songs in the distinctive Cerkno dialect of his parents' native region. Career After graduating from the Nova Gorica Grammar School, Mlakar studied acting at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana, graduating from the drama program in 1986.
