Christmas Island, officially the Territory of Christmas Island, is an Australian external territory comprising the island of the same name. It is located in the Indian Ocean, around south of Java and Sumatra and around north-west of the closest point on the Australian mainland. It lies northwest of Perth and south of Singapore. It has an area of . Christmas Island had a population of 1,692 residents , the majority living in settlements on the northern edge of the island. The main settlement is Flying Fish Cove. Drumsite
Drumsite is a settlement on Christmas Island, Australia. Is located on the northeast coast, near the capital, Flying Fish Cove. The ethnic composition of the population is Chinese and European. In the area there are migration routes of red crabs that are protected. The Drumsite Village project, a new housing development, was approved by the Gillard administration amid concerns about the growing number of asylum seekers on the island, and is administered by a Queensland company. Flying Fish Cove
Flying Fish Cove ( zh, 飛魚灣, ms, Pantai Ikan Terbang) is the capital city and main settlement of Australia's Christmas Island. Although it was originally named after British survey-ship '' Flying-Fish'', many maps simply label it "The Settlement". It was the first British settlement on the island, established in 1888. About a third of the territory's total population of 1,600 lives in Flying Fish Cove, which lies near the north-eastern tip of the island. There is a small harbour which serves tourists with yachts. Poon Saan is the second largest village on Christmas Island, an external territory of Australia. It is administrated as part of the island capital - Flying Fish Cove. Ethnic Chinese make up the majority of inhabitants. In Cantonese, Poon Saan (, Jyutping: ''bun3 saan1'') means "halfway up the hill". The architecture of Poon Saan reflects the Chinese heritage of the majority of residents in being Singapore style units, rather than the Western style common in Flying Fish Cove. The Java sparrow has become established on the island with populations near Poon Saan.
