South Tyneside
South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, North East England. It is bordered by all four other boroughs in Tyne and Wear – Gateshead to the west, Sunderland in the south, North Tyneside to the north, and Newcastle upon Tyne to the Northwest. The border county of Northumberland lies further north. The borough was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the County Borough of South Shields along with the municipal borough of Jarrow and the urban districts of Boldon and Hebburn from County Durham. Part of the Tyneside conurbation, the sixth largest in the United Kingdom, South Tyneside has a geographical area of and an estimated population of 153,700 (Mid-year 2010), measured at the 2011 Census as 148,127. Boldon School
Boldon School is a coeducational secondary school located in Boldon Colliery, South Tyneside, England. A community school administered by South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council, it has a specialism in sports. The school relocated to a new £17.5 million building in 2006. South Tyneside College
South Tyneside College is a large further education college in South Tyneside in North East England. Its main site is in the town of South Shields. The college offers part-time and full-time courses for young students and adults. It was formed in 1984 by the merger of Hebburn Technical College and the Marine and Technical College, the latter founded in 1861 by a trust created by Dr Thomas Winterbottom, a former surgeon-general in Sierra Leone. The college is still one of the largest merchant navy training colleges in the United Kingdom, and attracts students from as far afield as India and Africa. Whitburn, South Tyneside
Whitburn is a village in South Tyneside in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear on the coast of North East England. It is located north of the city of Sunderland and south of the town of South Shields. Historically, Whitburn was a part of County Durham. Other nearby population centres include Seaburn, Cleadon and Marsden. The village lies on a south-facing slope, part of Durham's Magnesian Limestone plateau, which overlooks Sunderland. The population for the combined Whitburn and Marsden Ward in the 2011 UK Census was 7,448. For much of its history, Whitburn was a fishing and agricultural community. The village contains three schools, three churches, cricket club, recreational grounds, a pub and a variety of shops. Whitburn Church Of England Academy
Whitburn Church of England Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Whitburn, South Tyneside. Its motto is "Excellence for all". The academy was known as Whitburn Comprehensive School before moving and receiving major upgrades funded by the Church of England. Jarrow School is a coeducational secondary school located in Jarrow, South Tyneside, England admitting pupils aged 11 to 16. History It was opened on 6 January 2003 following the merger of Springfield Comprehensive and Hedworthfield Comprehensive, and is based at the old Springfield site. Hebburn Comprehensive School
Hebburn Comprehensive School is a coeducational secondary school located in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, England, with pupils aged from 11 to 16. The school was previously awarded specialist status as a Maths and Computing College. In the spring of 2010, the school began a complete refurbishment as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme that was completed in April 2012. Harton Academy
Harton Academy (formerly Harton Technology College, or Harton Comprehensive School) is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in South Shields, South Tyneside, England. It was founded on the existing site in 1936. In 2006, Ofsted rated the school as 'outstanding' and it has received three Government Achievement awards, as well as being named in the 'top 50 most improved specialist schools' throughout the UK. In 2009 Ofsted highlighted Harton as one of 12 outstanding schools serving disadvantaged communities. In 2013, they delivered a similar report.
