Plymouth
Plymouth () is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately south-west of Exeter and south-west of London. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and south-west. Plymouth's early history extends to the Bronze Age when a first settlement emerged at Mount Batten. This settlement continued as a trading post for the Roman Empire, until it was surpassed by the more prosperous village of Sutton founded in the ninth century, now called Plymouth. In 1588, an English fleet based in Plymouth intercepted and defeated the Spanish Armada. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers departed Plymouth for the New World and established Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what is now the United States of America. Plymstock School
Plymstock School is a state comprehensive secondary school (ages 11–19) in Plymstock, a suburb of Plymouth, Devon, England. It was the first West Devon comprehensive school (built on the core of a post war secondary school) and is now a Specialist Sports College. it has 1,626 students, of whom 240 are in the sixth form. In April 2011, the school became an academy. Plymstock School was maintained by Devon County Council until 1 April 1967, when it was transferred to Plymouth City Council which has maintained it until April 2011. In 2003 it underwent what was reported as a budget crisis, forcing redundancies and reduced spending on new classrooms to replace temporary facilities. Longcause Community Special School is a special school for students aged 4 to 16 with learning difficulties. The college has about 100 students. The school specialises in children with cognitive, learning, communication and interaction difficulties. Plymouth High School for Girls (PHSG) is a girls' grammar school founded in 1874. It is located on St Lawrence Road in Plymouth, Devon, England, close to Mutley Plain and Plymouth city centre. History In February 1874 the Devon and Cornwall Girls' School Company was formed, opening a school for girls in Sherwell House, North Hill (only a few hundred metres from the school's current location), on 14 September that year. It was intended that the school should move to other premises and for this purpose a fund had been set up to purchase a suitable site. Land surrounding a detached property known as 'North Hill' was chosen and the first part of these new premises were opened by the bishop of Exeter, Doctor Frederick Temple, on 21 January 1878. Devonport High School for Girls is a selective girls' state grammar school with academy status (ages 11–18) in Plymouth, England. History In September 1908 Devonport High School for Girls (DHSG) was recognised as a girls' secondary school. It was originally located at Paradise Road, Stoke in Plymouth, and known as Devonport Municipal Secondary School for Girls. It was established approximately 15 years after its sibling Devonport High School for Boys. The school moved to its current location which overlooks the Plymouth Argyle football ground, Home Park, on 10 September 1937. The school was divided into four houses- St.Joan, St.Margaret, St.Monica and St.Ursula. They were then changed to Falcon, Kestrel, Hawk and Eagle. Devonport High School for Boys is a grammar school and academy, for boys aged 11 to 18, in Plymouth, Devon, England. It has around 1,135 pupils. Its catchment area includes southwest Devon and southeast Cornwall as well as Plymouth. Pupils are accepted on the basis of academic aptitude. School history The school was founded by Alonzo Rider on Albert Road, Stoke, Devonport, on 16 January 1896 to meet the needs of boys in Devonport and the surrounding area who sought a career in the Royal Navy, as engineers and civil servants. Tor Bridge High (formerly Estover Community College) is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in the Estover area of Plymouth in the English county of Devon. Previously a community school administered by Plymouth City Council, Tor Bridge High converted to academy status on 1 August 2011. Stoke Damerel Community College is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Stoke, Plymouth, England. Stoke Damerel Community College was formed after the closure of Penlee Secondary Modern in the late 1980s. The school has recently had major building and refurbishment work completed to improve its entrance and create larger, more modern open spaces.
