This is a list of satirical news websites which have a satirical bent, are parodies of news, which consist of fake news stories for mainly humorous purposes. Definition The best-known example is ''The Onion'', the online version of which started in 1996. These sites are not to be confused with fake news websites, which deliberately publish hoaxes in an attempt to profit from gullible readers. News satire is a type of parody presented in a format typical of mainstream journalism, and called a satire because of its content. News satire is not to be confused with fake news that has the intent to mislead. News satire is popular on the web, where it is relatively easy to mimic a credible news source and stories may achieve wide distribution from nearly any site. The Onion
''The Onion'' is an American digital media company and newspaper organization that publishes satirical articles on international, national, and local news. The company is based in Chicago but originated as a weekly print publication on August 29, 1988 in Madison, Wisconsin. ''The Onion'' began publishing online in early 1996. In 2007, they began publishing satirical news audio and video online as the ''Onion News Network''. In 2013, ''The Onion'' ceased publishing its print edition and launched Onion Labs, an advertising agency. ''The Onion''s articles cover current events, both real and fictional, parodying the tone and format of traditional news organizations with stories, editorials, and man-on-the-street interviews using a traditional news website layout and an editorial voice modeled after that of the Associated Press. Recurring topics include homosexuality, atheism, Hollywood, and other purported threats to American culture. Like similar satirical websites, Christwire's stories have sometimes been erroneously taken at face value. According to co-founder Kirwin Watson, their target is not Christians but "those who do not question what they hear on the news". ClickHole is a satirical website (formerly owned by ''The Onion'') that parodies clickbait websites such as BuzzFeed and Upworthy. It was launched on June 12, 2014, in conjunction with ''The Onion''s decision to stop its print edition and shift its focus exclusively to the internet. According to ClickHole's senior editor, Jermaine Affonso, the website "is The Onion's response to click-bait content" and serves as "a parody of online media". Critics noted that, on a deeper level, ClickHole illustrates the shallow nature of social media content and media sites' desperation to share such content. On February 3, 2020, the website was acquired by the team behind Cards Against Humanity. After the purchase, the website's employees became its majority owners, and will retain complete creative control. ''The Civilian'' is a satirical New Zealand website. It was started in 2013 by Ben Uffindell, who finished a degree in political science at University of Canterbury in 2012. It has been compared to the US satirical website/newspaper ''The Onion''. In April 2013 ''The Civilian'' received about 15,000 page views per day, and in a May 2013 interview Uffindell stated an average of 20,000–25,000 page views per day. The site caused controversy when Conservative Party leader Colin Craig threatened to sue for defamation over satirical quotes regarding his stance on same-sex marriage. The Chaser are an Australian satirical comedy group, best known for their television programmes and satirical news masthead. The group take their name from their satirical newspaper, a publication known to challenge conventions of taste. The group's motto is "Striving for Mediocrity in a World of Excellence". Founding The Chaser's earliest foundation was a satirical school paper called ''The Tiger'', created by future members Charles Firth, Dominic Knight and Chas Licciardello as a way to "wring as much money as heycould out of their expensive private school" while attending Sydney Grammar. The Burrard Street Journal (or BSJ) is an online satire news website based in Vancouver, BC. The site gained notoriety in August 2016 after a number of websites reported a BSJ article about then President Obama moving to Canada as fact. Many other Burrard Street Journal articles and videos have been reported as real news. In July 2016, an article titled 'Trump Claims America Should Never Have Given Canada Its Independence' was shared over 9,000 times and in March 2016, an edited BSJ video reporting Donald Trump building a wall with Canada was shared over 50,000 times and has received 4.5 million views as of March 2018.
