Royal Aeronautical Society
The Royal Aeronautical Society, also known as the RAeS, is a British multi-disciplinary professional institution dedicated to the global aerospace community. Founded in 1866, it is the oldest aeronautical society in the world. Members, Fellows, and Companions of the society can use the post-nominal letters MRAeS, FRAeS, or CRAeS, respectively. Henry McDonald (engineer)
Dr. Henry "Harry" McDonald DSc FREng (14 January 1937 – 25 May 2021) was a Scottish-American aeronautical engineer specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Director of the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California from 1996 to 2002. Biography McDonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 24 January 1937 but was moved out of the city due to the Clydebank Blitz. He was raised in Girvan, studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Glasgow, and trained as pilot with the Royal Air Force Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron. He emigrated to the United States in 1965 with his wife June Seaton McDonald M.D., where he lived and worked until his death in 2021. Frank De Winne
Frank, Viscount De Winne (born 25 April 1961, in Ledeberg, Belgium) is a Belgian Air Component officer and an ESA astronaut. He is Belgium's second person in space (after Dirk Frimout). He was the first ESA astronaut to command a space mission when he served as commander of ISS Expedition 21. ESA astronaut de Winne serves currently as Head of the European Astronaut Centre of the European Space Agency in Cologne/Germany (Köln). Education De Winne graduated in 1979 from the Royal School of Cadets in Lier. In 1984, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy with the degree of Master of Sciences in Engineering (Polytechnics). David Southwood
David John Southwood (born 30 June 1945) is a British space science, space scientist who holds the post of Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London. He was the President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2012–2014, and earlier served as the Director of Science and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency (2001–2011). Southwood's research interests have been in solar–terrestrial physics and planetary science, particularly magnetospheres. He built the magnetic field instrument for the Cassini–Huygens, Cassini Saturn orbiter. Roy Dommett
Roy Leonard Dommett (25 June 1933 – 2 November 2015) was a British engineer and rocket scientist, and the United Kingdom's Chief Missile Scientist, who for many years led the United Kingdom's research and development of both ballistic missiles and space rockets for the delivery of satellites into orbit. In retirement he lived in Hampshire. Private life and family Roy Leonard Dommett, a descendant of an old East Devon family, was born on 25 June 1933, in Itchen, Southampton. His parents were Leonard Frank Dommett (1907-1996), a painter and decorator, and Rose Eveline Diaper, a cook and housekeeper. He was educated at Itchen Grammar School and Bristol University, gaining a first in aeronautical engineering in 1954. Charles Frederick Joy (13 September 1911 – 12 April 1989) FRAeS was a British aeronautical engineer and designer. Career He started at Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft in 1927, staying until 1940. From 1940 to 1941 he was at the Gloster Aircraft Company. Handley Page He joined Handley Page in 1944 as Deputy Chief Draughtsman, becoming assistant chief designer in 1947. He became chief designer at Handley Page Aircraft in 1953, when Reginald Stafford was technical director. He also had been deputy managing director at Handley Page. When the Victor aircraft was being developed, he was the assistant chief designer. Dietrich Küchemann
Dietrich Küchemann CBE FRS FRAeS (11 September 1911 – 23 February 1976) was a German aerodynamicist who made several important contributions to the advancement of high-speed flight. He spent most of his career in the UK, where he is best known for his work on Concorde. Biography Küchemann was born in Göttingen where he studied at its University of Göttingen, home of the largest German institute of aerodynamics. He was originally going to move on to pure physics research under Max Born, a friend of his father's, but lost this chance when Born and several other Jewish members of the University staff were expelled from the country by the Nazi regime. Instead Küchemann went on to join Ludwig Prandtl in aerodynamics research. He published his doctoral thesis in 1936.
