Charles Joy (engineer)
Charles Frederick Joy (13 September 1911 – 12 April 1989) FRAeS was a British aeronautical engineer and designer. Career He started at Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft in 1927, staying until 1940. From 1940 to 1941 he was at the Gloster Aircraft Company. Handley Page He joined Handley Page in 1944 as Deputy Chief Draughtsman, becoming assistant chief designer in 1947. He became chief designer at Handley Page Aircraft in 1953, when Reginald Stafford was technical director. He also had been deputy managing director at Handley Page. When the Victor aircraft was being developed, he was the assistant chief designer. Jetstream As chief designer, he was responsible for the Handley Page Jetstream, which first flew on 18 August 1967 at Radlett in Hertfordshire. It was planned to produce around 10 Jetstreams a month. Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company, or Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, was a British aircraft manufacturer. Gloster Aircraft Company
The Gloster Aircraft Company was a British aircraft manufacturer from 1917 to 1963. Founded as the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company Limited during the First World War, with the aircraft construction activities of H H Martyn & Co Ltd of Cheltenham, England it produced fighters during the war. It was renamed later as foreigners found 'Gloucestershire' difficult to pronounce. It later became part of the Hawker Siddeley group and the Gloster name disappeared in 1963. Gloster designed and built several fighters that equipped the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the interwar years including the Gladiator, the RAF's last biplane fighter. The company built most of the wartime production of Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Typhoons for their parent company Hawker Siddeley while its design office was working on the first British jet aircraft, the E.28/39 experimental aircraft. Reginald Stafford
Reginald Spencer Stafford CBE FRAeS (21 April 1903 – September 1980) was an aeronautical engineer, and the designer of the Handley Page Victor. Early life Reggie Stafford attended Kilburn Grammar School. Career He worked for Handley Page, joining in 1926. In 1934 he became chief aerodynamicist, and chief designer in 1945, in charge of the design team. He became Technical Director in 1953. He retired from the company in 1968, after 42 years. Handley Page Victor He designed the HP.80 aircraft with Godfrey Henry Lee. The Victor was known for its crescent wing. The first HP Victor, ''WB771'', was first flown by Sqn Ldr Hedley Hazelden on 24 December 1952 at Radlett. On 2 January 1953, the aircraft was named ''Victor'' by the Air Ministry. The first production Victor ''XA917'' first flew on 1 February 1956. Personal life He died in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire in 1980 aged 77. In the 1956 New Year Honours he received the CBE. Handley Page Victor
The Handley Page Victor is a British jet-powered strategic bomber developed and produced by Handley Page during the Cold War. It was the third and final '' V bomber'' to be operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF), the other two being the Avro Vulcan and the Vickers Valiant. Entering service in 1958, the Victor was initially developed as part of the United Kingdom's airborne nuclear deterrent, but it was retired from the nuclear mission in 1968, following the discovery of fatigue cracks which had been exacerbated by the RAF's adoption of a low-altitude flight profile to avoid interception, and due to the pending introduction of the Royal Navy's submarine-launched Polaris missiles in 1969. With the nuclear deterrent mission relinquished to the Royal Navy a large V-bomber fleet could not be justified. Handley Page Jetstream
The Handley Page HP.137 Jetstream is a small twin-turboprop airliner, with a pressurised fuselage. The aircraft was designed to meet the requirements of the United States commuter and regional airline market. The design was later improved and built by British Aerospace as the BAe Jetstream 31 and BAe Jetstream 32, featuring different turboprop engines. Development Handley Page was in an awkward position in the 1960s, wishing to remain independent of the "big two" British companies (Hawker Siddeley and the British Aircraft Corporation), but without the money needed to develop a large new airliner that would keep it in the market. Radlett is a village in Hertfordshire, England, between Elstree and St Albans on Watling Street, with a population of 8,042. It is in the council district of Hertsmere in the south of the county, and is covered by two wards; Aldenham East and Aldenham West. It is located inside the M25 motorway. Wycombe District was a local government district in Buckinghamshire in south-central England. Its council was based in the town of High Wycombe.
