Société Entomologique De France
The Société entomologique de France, or French Entomological Society, is devoted to the study of insects. The society was founded in 1832 in Paris, France. The society was created by eighteen Parisian entomologists on January 31, 1832. The first (honorary) president was Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) who was elected unanimously and established the goal of the society to contribute to and progress the development of entomology in all its aspects. Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat
Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat was a French entomologist, born 29 March 1799 in Paris and died 16 December 1884 in Paris. In government service in Paris, this amateur entomologist studied mainly beetles and birds. He published nearly 250 notes and papers and was the author of more than 2,000 species. He was one of the founders of the Société entomologique de France in 1832. On his death, his collection was dispersed. Sylvain Auguste De Marseul
Sylvain Auguste de Marseul (January 21, 1812 in Fougerolles-du-Plessis in Normandy – April 16, 1890 in Paris) was a French Roman Catholic priest and entomologist. He taught in the Petit séminaire de Paris from 1833 to 1836. In 1842, founded a college at Laval, then from 1850 to 1853, he taught in Paris. In 1854, he left his college for America where he remained eight months and discovered entomology. The abbot of Marseul was the author of many publications. He founded in 1864 a review devoted to the Coleoptera and named ''L'Abeille'', the Bee. On his death this publication was continued by Ernest Marie Louis Bedel (1849-1922) then by René Gabriel Jeannel (1879-1965). The abbot also studied the history of the beginnings of French entomology in a series of review article in the Bee under the generic title ''Entomologistes et de leurs écrits'', Entomologists and their writings (1882 to 1887). Paul Gervais
Paul Gervais full name François Louis Paul Gervais (26 September 1816 – 10 February 1879) was a French palaeontologist and entomologist. Biography Gervais was born in Paris, where he obtained the diplomas of doctor of science and of medicine, and in 1835 he began palaeontological research as assistant in the laboratory of comparative anatomy at the ''Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle''. In 1841 he obtained the chair of zoology and comparative anatomy at the Faculty of Sciences in Montpellier, of which he was in 1856 appointed dean. In 1848–1852 appeared his important work ''Zoologie et paléontologie françaises'', supplementary to the palaeontological publications of Georges Cuvier and Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville; of this a second and greatly improved edition was issued in 1859. Maurice Jean Auguste Girard (13 September 1822 – 8 September 1886) was a French entomologist. Girard was born in Givet, Ardennes, and entered École normale supérieure in 1844. In 1847 he taught physics in Périgueux. After having obtained his ''agrégation'', he left for Dijon where he taught from 1853 to 1873. during this time he obtained his “licence” and his “doctorat ès-sciences naturelles” with a thesis entitled Étude sur la chaleur libre dégagée par les animaux invertébrés et spécialement les insectes. He edited L'Insectologie agricole, journal traitant des insectes utiles... et des insectes nuisibles... from 1867 to 1870. He wrote more than 200 publications on insects and a book on François Péron- François Péron, naturaliste voyageur aux australes (1800-1804) (J.-B. Auguste Jean François Grenier
Auguste Jean François Grenier (22 September 1814, in Andelys – 13 July 1890, in Bagnères) was a French doctor and entomologist. He studied at Rouen, then at Paris where he qualified as a doctor in 1842. He was devoted to entomology only between 1857 and 1859. The war of 1870 put an end to his research. Grenier was especially interested in cavernicolous Coleoptera and made a large collection including the cave insect collections of Charles Nicholas Aubé (1802–1869) and of Jules Linder (1830–1869). Victor Antoine Signoret
Victor Antoine Signoret (6 April 1816, Paris – 3 April 1889, Paris) was a French pharmacologist, physician and entomologist. In 1845 Signoret gained his doctorate in pharmacology at the University of Paris. His thesis was entitled ''De l'Arsenic considéré sous ses divers points de vue''. Pharmacology made him a wealthy man and he made many collecting trips mainly in Europe but also in Asia Minor. His very important collection is in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria although there is significant material in La Specola museum in Florence. Signoret worked on Hemiptera, and is considered to be one of the first great students of Coccoidea ( mealybugs and scale insects). He established methods for the preparation of slides for the examination of mealybug morphology. Joseph Alexandre Laboulbène
Joseph Alexandre Laboulbène (25 August 1825 Agen – 7 December 1898, Paris) was a French physician and entomologist. A friend of the entomologist Jean-Marie Léon Dufour (1780-1865), he studied medicine in the University of Paris and was awarded the title Docteur in 1854. He taught in the medical faculty until 1879. Laboulbène was interested in harmful insects notably in the Order Diptera. The order of mushrooms Laboulbeniales, is dedicated to him, by Engler in 1898. In 1853, ''Laboulbenia'' which is a genus of fungi in the family Laboulbeniaceae, was named in his honour. Jacques-Marie-Frangile Bigot
Jacques Marie Frangile Bigot (1818–1893) was a French naturalist and entomologist most noted for his studies of Diptera. Bigot was born in Paris, France, where he lived all his life, though he had a small house in Quincy-sous-Sénart, Essonne. He became a member of the Entomological Society of France in 1844, and his first paper was published in its Annals in 1845, as was most of his later work. Bigot was a prolific author, and, like Francis Walker, his work was the subject of much later criticism. Bigot's collection of exotic (extra-European) Tabanidae and Syrphidae was purchased by George Henry Verrall, who gave it to the Natural History Museum in London. The exotic Asilidae and all his European Diptera were presented to the Hope Department of Entomology of Oxford University.
