List Of Presidents Of The Legislative Assembly Of The Azores
The list of presidents of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores consists of the chairpersons for the autonomous local legislature of the Azores, since the Carnation Revolution that installed the democratic Third Portuguese Republic. This list includes the leaders of the transitional regimes and those presidents elected after the institutionalization of the autonomy statute that provided archipelago with its laws and democratic rights. On 21 July 1976, Álvaro Monjardino was elected by plenum of the Regional Assembly, the first President of the Azorean Assembly, nominated by the first President of the Azores ( João Bosco Mota Amaral). João Bosco Mota Amaral
João Bosco Soares da Mota Amaral (born 15 April 1943, in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores) is a Portuguese politician. He served as President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal from 2002 to 2005 and President of the Autonomous Regional Government of the Azores from 1976 to 1995. Career He earned a Master's degree in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and is a Doctorate '' honoris causa'' in Economic Sciences from the University of the Azores. He integrated the Liberal Wing, led by Francisco Sá Carneiro, and was elected a Deputy to the National Assembly in 1969. Dionísio Mendes de Sousa (born 9 October 1940) is a Portuguese politician, writer, educator, and former president of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores. Biography Sousa was born in Vila de São Sebastião, Angra do Heroísmo, on the Azorean island of Terceira. Following his primary education, Mendes studied at the Episcopal Seminary in Angra do Heroísmo from October 1952 to June 1964. In his course work he obtained high marks—around 16 out of a scale of 20—in more than half of his disciplines. Academic career Between 1965 and 1968 he was conscripted into mandatory military service and stationed at various military installations, including the main army barracks in Lisbon. The Azores Regional Election (2012) ( pt, Eleições Regionais dos Açores, 2012) was an election held on 14 October 2012 for the legislative assembly and government of the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores. in which the Socialist Party nominee, under the leadership of Vasco Cordeiro won an absolute majority with 49% of the vote, in comparison to their direct rivals, the Social Democratic Party (led by Berta Cabral), who achieved only 33% of the vote. Voter turnout was low (although higher than in 2008) with just under 47.9% of the electorate casting their ballot on election day.
