Regina Pessoa
Regina Maria Póvoa Pessoa Martins (born 16 December 1969) is a Portuguese animator. Biography Regina Pessoa was born in Coimbra, but lived in a village near the city until she was seventeen. Without a TV, she spent her time reading, listening to the older ones telling stories and also painting her grandmother's house doors and walls using charcoal, encouraged by her uncle. She graduated in painting from University of Porto in 1998 and during her time as a student took part in different animation workshops, having participated in Espace Projets (Annecy, 1995) with the short ''A Noite'', which she would finish in 1999. In 1992 she started working in Filmógrafo - Estúdio de Cinema de Animação do Porto, where she collaborated as animator in various films. Her short ''Tragic Story with Happy Ending'' is the most awarded Portuguese film ever. Maria Helena Vieira Da Silva
Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (13 June 1908 – 6 March 1992) was a Portuguese abstract painter. She was considered a leading member of the European abstract expressionism movement known as Art Informel. Her works feature complex interiors and city views using lines that explore space and perspective. She also worked in tapestry and stained glass. Life Vieira da Silva was born in Lisbon, Portugal. At an early age, she traveled around the world because her affluent father was a diplomat. During this time, she came in contact with various avant-garde groups, such as the Italian Futurists and the Ballets Russes. At the age of eleven she had begun seriously studying drawing and painting at the ''Academia de Belas-Artes'' in Lisbon. Joana Vasconcelos
Joana Vasconcelos (born 1971) is a Portuguese artist known for her large-scale installations. Biography Vasconcelos was born in 1971 in Paris, France. Her family returned home to Portugal after their exile to France and following the Carnation Revolution in 1974. She studied at the Centro de Arte & Comunicação Visual in Lisbon. In 2009 she received the Order of Prince Henry. She lives and works in Lisbon. Work Vasconcelos exhibited at the 2005 Venice Biennale where she included ''A Noiva (The Bride)'', a 20 ft. high chandelier made of over 14,000 OB Tampons. Katherine Swift (1956–2004) was an Irish-born Portuguese painter, illustrator and ceramicist. Biography Born in Dublin in 1956, Swift was the first child of Patrick Swift (painter) and Oonagh Ryan (formerly married to Alexis Guedroitz with whom she had a daughter, Ania Guédroïtz). Her uncle was the artist and man of letters, John Ryan; her aunt the film actress Kathleen Ryan. Her father gave a portrait of the poet Patrick Kavanagh to the doctor, Michael Solomons, as a gift for delivering Katherine and the doctor subsequently bequeathed the portrait to the Dublin Writers Museum, where it can be seen today. Biography She was born in Porto, Portugal, the youngest of seven children to Portuguese emigrants António Martins de Sousa and Olinda Peres. The family lived in Brazil and Chile before moving back to Porto, Portugal in 1869. They lived in the Quinta da China near the Douro River in a home bought by her father before he died in 1874, when she was four years old. She was sister of the painter Aurélia de Souza. She began taking lessons with António da Costa Lima. She began studies at the Fine-Arts Academy of Porto, where she was a pupil of João Marques de Oliveira, who greatly influenced her style. In 1898, she moved to Paris to study painting at the Julian Academy, taking courses with Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant.
