Rosa Bloch-Bollag
Rosa Bloch-Bollag (1880 – 13 July 1922) was a Swiss politician and activist. Who, as a member of the Swiss Socialist Party, led a women's demonstration against increases in food prices in 1918. In 1920, she was one of the founding members of the Swiss Communist Party. Biography Born on 30 June 1880 in Zürich, Rosa Bloch was the daughter of the grain merchant Berthold Bloch and Julie Guggenheim. Brought up in a family of a poor Jewish merchant, once she gained her independence, she worked as a representative of a jewellery shop. Initially an anarchist, she joined the socialist party in 1912 but later became a Marxist. She proved to be a competent editor of the women workers' journal ''Die Vorkämperin'', contributing articles which not only were politically engaging but were remarkably well drafted. Ulla E. Dydo (February 4, 1925 – September 10, 2017) was a Swiss-born writer, editor and noted Gertrude Stein scholar. She was Professor Emerita at the City University of New York and author of ''Gertrude Stein: The Language That Rises, 1923–1934''. Early life Ulla E. Dydo was born Ursula Elisabeth Eder in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1925. Her parents were Jeanne Eder-Schwyzer (1894–1957) and Dr. Robert Eder (1885–1944). After studying at University of Zurich and University College, London, Dydo moved to the United States. She received an MA from Bryn Mawr College in 1948 and a PhD from University of Wisconsin–Madison, in 1955, with a dissertation on "The Poetry of Allen Tate." Gottlieb Duttweiler (15 August 1888 – 8 June 1962) was a Swiss businessman and politician, founder of both the Migros chain of grocery stores and the Alliance of Independents (''Landesring der Unabhängigen'') party. Life and work Duttweiler was born in Zürich. Starting with five vehicles in 1925, his Migros eventually opened stores and is today one of the main grocery chains in Switzerland. The original secret to his success was bringing daily necessities to the consumer by excluding the middlemen. As a result, many producers initially chose to boycott Migros, and Duttweiler's Migros would itself manufacture or package those missing products. Monika Dettwiler (born 17 April 1948) is a Swiss-Italian journalist and author. Life Monika Dettwiler was born in Zürich, 17 April 1948. She has a doctorate in history and studied history, art history and archeology in Rome, where she initially worked as a journalist and organizer of cultural tours. Her first novel, "Berner Lauffeuer", was published in 1998 and was on the bestseller list of the "Schweizer Buchhändler- und Verleger-Verband" (Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association) for five months. Elias Canetti (; bg, Елиас Канети; 25 July 1905 – 14 August 1994) was a German-language writer, born in Ruse, Bulgaria to a Sephardic family. They moved to Manchester, England, but his father died in 1912, and his mother took her three sons back to continental Europe. They settled in Vienna. Canetti moved to England in 1938 after the Anschluss to escape Nazi persecution. He became a British citizen in 1952. He is known as a modernist novelist, playwright, memoirist, and nonfiction writer. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981, "for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power". René Burri
René Burri (9 April 1933 – 20 October 2014) was a Swiss photographer. Burri was a member of Magnum Photos and photographed major political, historical and cultural events and key figures of the second half of the 20th century. He made portraits of Che Guevara and Pablo Picasso as well as iconic pictures of São Paulo and Brasília. Career Burri studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich from 1949 to 1953, where he worked under Hans Finsler, Alfred Willimann and Johannes Itten. From 1953 to 1955 he began working as a documentary filmmaker while completing military service. During this time he also began working with Leica cameras.
