Cyprus ; tr, Kıbrıs (), officially the Republic of Cyprus,, , lit: Republic of Cyprus is an island country located south of the Anatolian Peninsula in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Ruzen Atakan
Ruzen Atakan (born 1966) in Akincilar is a Turkish-Cypriot painter and the daughter of a school teacher Kemal Atakan. She graduated from Gazi University Turkey, in 1988. She has had three solo shows and took part in mixed and group exhibitions in Cyprus as well as overseas. She teaches at Fine Arts Secondary School, Nicosia, Cyprus. İsmet Güney
İsmet Vehit Güney (15 July 1923 – 23 June 2009) was a Turkish Cypriot artist, cartoonist, teacher and painter. He is best known as the designer of the modern flag of the Republic of Cyprus, the country's coat of arms and the original Cyprus lira in 1960. Güney's design was unique, as the Republic of Cyprus is the first country in the world to display a map on its flag. In 2008, Kosovo became the second country to adopt a national flag displaying a map. Biography Güney was born in 1923 in Limassol, Cyprus. He began painting while he was a student in high school. After graduating from the Teachers Training College, he started working as an arts teacher in 1948. From 1948 to 1977 he attended Lefkoşa Erkek Lisesi teaching Art and History. Xanthos Hadjisoteriou
Xanthos Hadjisoteriou (1920-2003) was an acclaimed Greek Cypriot painter and interior designer. Born in Famagusta in 1920 and studied business at University of Beirut (1938–1940). Later studied art at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London (1951–1953) and interior design at the Byam Shaw School of Art The Byam Shaw School of Art, often known simply as Byam Shaw, was an independent art school in London, England, which specialised in fine art and offered foundation and degree level courses. It was founded in 1910 by John Liston Byam Shaw and ... (1959). Xanthos Hadjisoteriou held many exhibitions in Cyprus and internationally. In Famagusta he presented his works permanently at the "Manastiri" and later at Peter's Gallery in Limassol, where he settled. He won many awards for his art internationally. Mustafa Hulusi
Mustafa Hulusi (born in 1971, London, United Kingdom) is a British artist. His work is diverse and includes fields such as paintings, videos, installation and photography. Biography Hulusi was born in London to a Turkish Cypriot family. After graduating from Fine Art and Critical Studies at Goldsmiths College, Hulusi continued towards his master's degree at the Royal College of Art. He had his first group exhibition in 2004 called "New Contemporaries 04" and his first solo exhibition in 2005, called "The end of the West" at the Max Wigram Gallery. In 2007, Hulusi represented Cyprus at the 52nd International Exhibition of Contemporary Art of La Biennale di Venezia and had solo exhibitions at A-Foundation, Liverpool, and Max Wigram Gallery. Telemachos Kanthos
Telemachos Kanthos (February 24, 1910 – November 18, 1993) was born in Alona, a village in the highland Pitsillia area of Cyprus. He was the son of Christodoulos E. Kanthos, a prominent local teacher, and his wife Evgenia Aravi. He is regarded generally as a father of modern Cypriot painting. His work is varied but his favorite subjects were the hills surrounding his village. Marios Loizides
Marios Loizides (1928–1988) was a Greek Cypriot visual artist. Life Loizides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. he studied painting and lithography at St. Martin's School of Art, London, between 1951-4, together with courses in stage and costume design. He later worked in London for a number of years as a graphic artist and designer. He moved to Greece in 1958 and, working exclusively as a painter, lived on the island of Hydra from 1961 until his death in 1988. Niki Marangou
Niki Marangou (1948 – 7 February 2013) was a Greek Cypriot author, poet, and painter. Early life and education Marangou was born in Limassol, Cyprus, in 1948. She studied sociology in West Berlin, Germany, from 1965 to 1970. Career After graduation, Marangou worked as a dramaturge at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation. She also ran a bookshop in Nicosia. She was the author of books of prose, poetry and children’s fairy tales. She was also a painter and had seven solo exhibitions. Her first solo exhibition was in 1975. She was a member of the Hellenic Authors Society and the Cyprus Writers Association. Some of her books were translated into German and Spanish. Awards Marangou received different awards. Nicos Nicolaides
Nicos Nicolaides ( el, Νίκος Νικολαΐδης) was a Greek Cypriot painter and writer. Early life Nicolaides was born the son of poor parents in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 3 April 1884. A sister, Maria, followed him two years later. He was only six or seven when their parents died, one after another. Their maternal aunt took charge of the two children. She, too, was not well off. When Nicos reached the fourth grade in the local primary school, he left to take a job in a bookbindery. But when the bookbinder dismissed him for spending more time reading the books than binding them, he took refuge with an icon-painter. Once he had learned the craft, his reputation spread throughout Cyprus as a professional painter of icons. Some paintings he did in 1904 still survive in the villages of the Pitsillia region. Stass Paraskos
Stass Paraskos ( el, Στας Παράσκος; 17 March 1933 – 4 March 2014) was an artist from Cyprus, although much of his life was spent teaching and working in England. Early life Paraskos was born in Anaphotia, a village near the city of Larnaca, Cyprus in 1933, the second of six sons of an impoverished peasant farmer. He went to England in 1953, working first as a pot washer and waiter in the ABC Tearoom in London's Tottenham Court Road, and then moving to the city of Leeds, in the north of England to become a cook in his brother's newly opened Greek restaurant. The restaurant became a popular haunt of the local art students who encouraged Paraskos to enrol for classes at Leeds College of Art (later Leeds Arts University). Arestís Stasí
Arestís Stasí (Aristides Anastassiades also known as il cipriota) was born in 1940 in Limassol, Cyprus and died in 2013 in Stuttgart, Germany. He spent his first years in the village of Platres in the Troödos mountains. He studied monumental painting, sculpture and restoration in Florence and Rome. In the 1960s and 1970s he dedicated himself in the restoration of ancient monuments in Cyprus including the heavily damaged (due to fire) ikonostasis of the Saint Lazarus Cathedral in Larnaca. Arestís Stasí has exhibited his art works in more than ten personal exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Sculptures, mosaics, paintings and other works of art of Arestís Stasí can be seen in various places including the monastery of Machairas, Nicosia, Paphos, Limassol, the villages of Kyperounta and Omodhos.
