Ottawa
Ottawa (, ; Canadian French: ) is the capital city of Canada. It is located at the confluence of the Ottawa River and the Rideau River in the southern portion of the province of Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec, and forms the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). Ottawa had a city population of 1,017,449 and a metropolitan population of 1,488,307, making it the fourth-largest city and fourth-largest metropolitan area in Canada. William Dowler Morris
William Dowler Morris (August 22, 1857 – April 13, 1931) was mayor of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1901. He was born in County Leitrim, Ireland in 1857 and came to Canada in 1877. He became involved in the oil, coal and real estate businesses; he also owned a brickyard. Morris was first elected to city council in 1892. He was forced to resign as mayor after being convicted of drinking after hours at the Russell House, an Ottawa hotel, an offence under the liquor license act. Under Ontario law at the time, the law provided that a violator of provincial law was disqualified from voting or holding public office for a period of two years, and Mayor Morris pled guilty on November 16, 1901. 1919 Ottawa Municipal Election
The city of Ottawa, Canada held municipal elections on January 6, 1919 to elect members of the 1919 Ottawa City Council. The election saw a woman elected in the city for the first time, with Marion McDougall (wife of the late John Lorn McDougall) being elected as a public school trustee in Dalhousie Ward. Mayor of Ottawa Fisher won seven of the city's nine wards, while Parent won the city's two francophone wards, By and Ottawa. Plebiscites The plebiscite lost in all but three wards, but won St. George Ward (which the bridge would connect with Downtown) by a large enough margin to pass city-wide by just nine votes. Despite the result, a bridge would not be built at that location until the Corktown Footbridge was built in 2006. Harold Fisher (politician)
Harold Fisher, (November 1, 1877 – 1928) was mayor of Ottawa from 1917 to 1920 and a Liberal MPP from 1923 to 1926. He grew up in Toronto where he attended the Jarvis Collegiate Institute, the University of Toronto, and then got his law degree from Osgoode Hall. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1902. He moved to Ottawa in 1903 and became one of that city's most important lawyers. He was elected as an Alderman in 1913 and became mayor in 1917. As mayor his most important accomplishment was founding the Ottawa Civic hospital. Built in the still largely agricultural area west of the city at a cost of some two million dollars, the hospital project was controversial, but Fisher felt it was important after the city had been devastated by the Spanish flu. In 1920, he became a King's Counsel. In 1923, he was elected to the provincial legislature representing the riding of Ottawa West and was made opposition finance critic with the Liberals. Charles Hopewell
