List Of Newspapers In Egypt
The number of Arabic newspapers in Egypt was about 200 in 1938. There were also 65 newspapers published in languages other than Arabic, such as Turkish, French and English. By 1951 Arabic language newspapers numbered to about 400, while 150 were published in other languages. By 2011, daily newspaper circulation in Egypt increased to more than 4.3 million copies. ''Al Gomhuria'' ( ar, الجمهورية; en, The Republic) is an influential state-owned Egyptian Arabic language daily newspaper. History and profile ''Al Gomhuria'' was established in 1954 following the Egyptian revolution and became the new regime's leading media outlet. The paper was published using the facilities of Wafd party's newspaper ''Al Misri'', which had been disestablished by the regime. Anwar Sadat became the editor of the daily. The publisher of the paper is Dar Al Tahrir which was founded following the 1952 revolution. However, ''Al Gomhuria'' could not completely achieved the goals set by Gamal Abdel Nasser. ''Al Balagh'' (Arabic:البلاغ; ''The Message'') is an Arabic language newspaper that has been in circulation since 1923 with some interruptions. The paper is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt. History and profile ''Al Balagh'' was launched by Abdul Qadir Hamzah in Cairo in 1923. He started the paper shortly after the suspension of his previous publication, a newspaper entitled ''Al Ahali''. The first issue of ''Al Balagh'' appeared on 28 June 1923. The publisher is a company with the same name. Hamzah also served as the editor-in-chief of the paper. Until 1937 the paper was close to the Wafd Party. ''Al Arabi'' is a newspaper based in Cairo, Egypt. It is the organ of the Nasserist Party. In the 1990s the paper was one of the opposition publications. In 1998 one of the editors of the paper was arrested and given six-month prison sentence due to the alleged defamation of a pro-government writer, Tharwat Abaza. In 1999 the party declared that it could not finance the paper anymore, and the Egyptian government proposed to provide financial support to the paper. However, the party did not accept the proposal, but reduced the frequency of ''Al Arabi'' from daily to weekly. ''Al Ahrar'' (Arabic الأحرار; ''the Free'' or ''the Liberal'') was a weekly newspaper published in Cairo, Egypt, from 1977 to 2013. The paper was the official media outlet of the Liberal Party. History and profile ''Al Ahrar'' was established during the Sadat era in 1977 and was based in Cairo. The first issue appeared in November that year.
