List Of New Brunswick Senators
This is a list of past and present members of the Senate of Canada representing the province of New Brunswick. During the Quebec Conference of 1864, New Brunswick was guaranteed 10 Senate seats, but because Prince Edward Island stalled for equal representation in the upper house, New Brunswick was awarded two of Prince Edward Island's Senate seats until 1873 when Prince Edward Island gave in and joined confederation New Brunswick dropped to 10 seats. New Brunswick kept 12 seats until the first two senators ended their term after 1873, they were not replaced. Current senators Notes: 1 Senators are appointed to represent New Brunswick. Senate Of Canada
The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. While the Senate is the upper house of parliament and the House of Commons is the lower house, this does not imply the former is more powerful than the latter. Jean Chrétien
Joseph Jacques Jean Chrétien (; born January 11, 1934) is a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 20th prime minister of Canada from 1993 to 2003. Born and raised in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, Chrétien is a law graduate from Université Laval. A Liberal, he was first elected to the House of Commons in 1963. Thomas-Jean Bourque (May 11, 1864 – February 16, 1952) was a physician and political figure in New Brunswick, Canada. Amos Edwin Botsford
Amos Edwin Botsford, (September 25, 1804 – March 19, 1894) was a Canadian farmer, judge, politician, and businessman. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, the son of William Botsford, and moved with his family to Westcock in 1808. He was a justice of the peace and a senior judge for the Inferior Court of Common Pleas in Westmorland County. He served in the county militia, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Botsford was named to the province's Legislative Council, serving from 1833 to 1866; he also served as a member of the Executive Council from 1838 to 1840. Arthur Meighen
Arthur Meighen (; June 16, 1874 – August 5, 1960) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the ninth prime minister of Canada from 1920 to 1921 and from June to September 1926. He led the Conservative Party from 1920 to 1926 and from 1941 to 1942. Meighen was born in St. Marys, Ontario. His family came from County Londonderry, Ireland. He studied mathematics at the University of Toronto, and then trained to be a lawyer. After qualifying to practise law, he moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Frank Bunting Black
Frank Bunting Black, (February 28, 1869 – February 28, 1945) was a merchant and political figure in New Brunswick, Canada. He represented Westmorland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1912 to 1916 as a Conservative member. Black went on to represent the division of Westmorland in the Senate of Canada from 1921 to 1945. He was born in Sackville, New Brunswick, the son of Joseph L. George Thomas Baird
George Thomas Baird (November 3, 1847 – April 21, 1917) was a Canadian politician. Born in Andover, New Brunswick, the eldest son of George Baird of Scottish descent, he was educated at Carleton County Grammar School. He was married November 12, 1879 to Ida T. Sadler, of St. John, N.B. He held a first class certificate from the Normal School of New Brunswick, and for six years he taught a Superior School and was also Postmaster from 1878 until 1882. He became a lumber merchant and general dealer in Perth Centre, New Brunswick starting in 1874. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1884. Mackenzie Bowell
Sir Mackenzie Bowell (; December 27, 1823 – December 10, 1917) was a Canadian newspaper publisher and politician, who served as the fifth prime minister of Canada, in office from 1894 to 1896. Bowell was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk, England. He and his family moved to Belleville, Ontario, in 1832.
