Nevada Department Of Corrections
The Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) is a governmental agency in the U.S. state of Nevada. The NDOC headquarters is located on the property of the Stewart Indian School in Carson City. History In 1862, the first prison in Nevada was created by the Territorial Legislature. The Legislature leased the property of the Warm Springs Hotel, just east of Carson City, for use as a Prison. This property was owned by Abraham Curry, who operated the Warm Springs Hotel on the property, which was also the meeting place of the Territorial Legislature. This prison is located on what is now Fifth Street in Carson. Curry became the first Warden of the Prison. A quarry on the site of the Prison was used for stone for the State Capitol and other public buildings. Ely State Prison
Ely State Prison (ESP) is a maximum security penitentiary located in unincorporated White Pine County, Nevada, about north of Ely. The facility, operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections, opened in July 1989. the prison has a staff of 406 and is a major employer in the Ely area. As of September 2010, the prison housed 1,077 male inmates. The state's death row for men is located at Ely State Prison, as is the execution chamber, which opened in 2016. History Residents of Ely, Nevada spent a year and $25,000 lobbying for the prison to be built in the area. On December 19, 1985, the prison was unanimously approved by the finance committees of the Nevada Legislature to be built in the Ely area. The prison opened in July 1989. High Desert State Prison (Nevada)
High Desert State Prison is a state prison in unincorporated Clark County, Nevada, near Indian Springs, northwest of Las Vegas. It is the largest institution of the Nevada Department of Corrections and the newest, having opened on September 1, 2000. It has a capacity of 4,176. Facilities The complex lies approximately northwest of Las Vegas along highway 95. It was designed as the most secure prison within the Nevada Department of Corrections system. High Desert State Prison contains 12 housing units designed to house 336 inmates each. Each of units 1–8 are separated into four (4) sections called "pods." Each set of two "pods" shares a common control center and staff office. Each set of two pods also shares a sally port and an activity room. There is also a infirmary at the institution. Lovelock Correctional Center
Lovelock Correctional Center (LCC) is a Nevada Department of Corrections prison in unincorporated Pershing County, Nevada, United States, near Lovelock. History Lovelock is in Pershing County and is the seventh major institution of the Nevada Department of Corrections. It was constructed and opened in two phases. The first started in August 1995 with two 168-cell housing units. Each cell can house two inmates. Construction on the second phase saw two 168-cell units and two 84-cell units made available for the institution to hold 1,680 offenders. Nevada State Prison
Nevada State Prison (NSP) was a penitentiary located in Carson City. The prison was in continuous operation since its establishment in 1862 and was managed by the Nevada Department of Corrections. It was one of the oldest prisons still operating in the United States. The high security facility housed 219 inmates in September 2011. It was designed to hold 841 inmates and employed a staff of 211. In the early 20th century, the prison became the sole designated facility for executions by the state of Nevada. It carried out the first death sentence by gas chamber in the United States with the execution of Gee Jon on February 8, 1924. The state of Nevada chose to close the facility for budgetary reasons. The prison closed its doors on May 18, 2012, with all inmates transferred to other institutions or released. Northern Nevada Correctional Center And Stewart Conservation Camp
Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) and Stewart Conservation Camp (SCC) are part of a prison complex located in Carson City. The correctional center was established in 1964 and is managed by the Nevada Department of Corrections. The medium security center housed 1,444 male and 9 female inmates as of September 2010. It is designed with a capacity for 1,619 inmates and employs a staff of 373 as of 2008. The adjacent Stewart Conservation Camp was opened in 1978 and is designed for 240 minimum security inmates who support the Nevada Division of Forestry with wildfire suppression and conservation efforts. The camp housed 328 male inmates and was budgeted for a total capacity of 350 as of September 2010. Southern Desert Correctional Center
Southern Desert Correctional Center (SDCC) is a state prison for men located in Indian Springs, Clark County, Nevada, owned and operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections. The capacity is 2149 inmates. Most are medium security. This facility should not be confused with the Southern Nevada Correctional Center, a state facility at Jean that closed in 2008, or the Nevada Southern Detention Center, a private prison at Pahrump run by Corrections Corporation of America under contract with the United States Marshals Service. History Southern Desert Correctional Center opened in February 1982 with seven 102-cell housing units, one of which housed federal prisoners until the NDOC took it over in 1987. Southern Nevada Correctional Center
Southern Nevada Correctional Center was a medium-security men's prison in Jean, Clark County, Nevada (about 30 miles south of Las Vegas), owned and operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections. The facility has been closed since 2008. First opened in 1978, the facility was closed in 2000, then re-opened for two years to house inmates under 25 years of age. As late as 2015, Nevada legislators raised the possibility of reopening it, if only to illustrate a political point. Warm Springs Correctional Center
Warm Springs Correctional Center (WSCC) is a Nevada Department of Corrections prison in Carson City, Nevada, United States. History Warm Springs is in Carson City and is the smallest of the seven major institutions of the Nevada Department of Corrections. Its name comes from the historical hotel built at the site by Abraham Curry, who was later the first warden of the Nevada State Prison. It was constructed in 1961 and was known as the Nevada Women’s Correctional Center until September 1997, when it was converted to a medium security men’s prison in 1998, then to a minimum custody facility in July 2003, before being converted back to a men's medium custody institution in July 2008.
