Falemata'aga - The Museum Of Samoa
Falemata'aga is the national museum of Samoa. It is housed in a former school which was built by the German colonial administration. Background The museum is located in Apia and is housed in the oldest building on the island, which is a former German colonial school. The museum is funded by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture and is the only government-funded museum dedicated to Samoan culture. The museum had been part of the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture, until 1999, when government departments were reorganised. Robert Louis Stevenson Museum
The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is a museum in Samoa, which commemorates the life of the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. The museum displays a curated version of his residence, as Stevenson lived in it. Its establishment was funded by overseas donations. Background Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, but travelled widely and in 1888 he and his family began a three-year tour of the South Pacific, eventually settling in Samoa. In 1890 Stevenson purchased of land and began to build a home there; by 1891 his mansion Villa Vailima was completed, named after the nearby village. The house had five bedrooms and a library, as well as the only working fireplace in Samoa. Art and furniture on display in the house included a nude by Rodin, given to Stevenson by the artist, a tablecloth gifted by Queen Victoria and a piano. The Samoan Islands were first settled some 3,500 years ago as part of the Austronesian expansion. Both Samoa's early history and its more recent history are strongly connected to the histories of Tonga and Fiji, nearby islands with which Samoa has long had genealogical links as well as shared cultural traditions. European explorers first reached the Samoan islands in the early 18th century. In 1768, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville named them the ''Navigator Islands''. The United States Exploring Expedition (1838–42), led by Charles Wilkes, reached Samoa in 1839. In 1855, J.C. Godeffroy & Sohn expanded its trading business into the Samoan archipelago.
