Mortar Carrier
A mortar carrier, or self-propelled mortar, is a self-propelled artillery piece in which a mortar is the primary weapon. Simpler vehicles carry a standard infantry mortar while in more complex vehicles the mortar is fully integrated into the vehicle and cannot be dismounted from the vehicle. Mortar carriers cannot be fired while on the move and some must be dismounted to fire. Evolution The mortar carrier has its genesis in the general mechanisation and motorisation of infantry in the years leading up to World War II. To move an infantry mortar and its crew various methods were developed, for example mounting the mortar on a wheeled carriage for towing behind a light vehicle, attaching the mortar and its permanently fixed baseplate to the rear of a vehicle — the entire assembly hinging from the horizontal for travel and to the vertical to fire, simply transporting the disassembled mortar (tube, baseplate and bipod) its crew and mortar bombs by truck or half-track. Patria NEMO
NEMO (from "NEw MOrtar") is a single barrelled 120 mm remote-controlled mortar turret currently being developed by Patria Land Oy in Finland. It is a lighter version of the AMOS mortar system, which has been in use within the Finnish Defence Forces since 2013. The NEMO can be fitted to most APCs and also to smaller landing craft, such as the Finnish Jurmo-class landing craft or the Swedish CB90-class fast assault craft. History The first customer of the weapon system was the Slovenian Army, which ordered 12, while the United Arab Emirates Naval Forces bought 12 patrol boats, where some were to be equipped with NEMO mortars. Saudi Arabia bought 36 turrets to equip its LAV II vehicles. Recently, Patria is offering the NEMO system fitted into standardised 20-ft-containers to increase flexibility: the mortar container can be lifted with and fired from a truck or a boat or can be set on the ground, e.g. as base defense. The Tyulpan is the largest mortar system in use today. The M1129 Mortar Carrier is an 8×8 wheeled armored mortar carrier of the Stryker family of combat vehicles produced by General Dynamics Land Systems. It is in use with the United States Army. Models with the double V-hull upgrade are known as the M1252 MCVV. Description The M1129 Mortar Carrier, also known as MCV-B (Mortar Carrier Vehicle version B), is based on the Stryker infantry carrier vehicle, which is itself a descendant of the Swiss Mowag Piranha III. The precursor of the M1129, the MCV-A, carried a mortar that could only be used dismounted, whereas the M1129B is only capable of firing its weapon from the mounted position within the vehicle. The M1064 mortar carrier is an American vehicle, consisting of the M121 mortar – a version of the Soltam K6, M120 mortar – mounted on an M113 armored personnel carrier, M113 chassis. The M1287 Mortar Carrier Vehicle will replace the M1064 in U.S. Army service. Design The design consists of the M298 Cannon, M191 Bipod, M9 Baseplate, and the Carrier Adaptation Kit. The GMM-120 self-propelled mortar ( ka, თვითმავალი ნაღმტყორცნი გმმ-120 ) is a proposed armoured mortar carrier concept with a 120 mm automated mortar station. The system is being developed by STC Delta. Design and technical characteristics The carrier vehicle is constructed around the chassis of 6x6 MAN KAT1 transport vehicles primarily used for military purposes. It consists of two main components and three independent sections with the crew cabin located in the center offering space for four passengers or artillery crew and a large back portion encasing the automated artillery station. The weapon is stored and remains concealed inside the carrier until the large roof hatches open in preparation for fire missions. PLL-05
The PLL-05 is a Chinese self-propelled gun-mortar in use by Chinese mechanised infantry formations. Conceptually it is similar to the Russian 2S23 "Nona-SVK" (the turret and weapon system of the 2S9 Nona mounted on a BTR-80 chassis) three of which China purchased for evaluation; at one time it was reported that China would purchase 100 of the Russian vehicles however this failed to occur, nor does it appear that there was a formal transfer of technology to China. The Chinese system features a longer barreled weapon mounted on the Type 92 variant of the WZ551 armored personnel carrier. The gun-mortar is a lighter and more compact artillery piece than the traditional gun-howitzer at the expense of maximum range, and which has the advantage of better accuracy, higher rate of fire and capability of direct fire in comparison to standard infantry mortars.
