Abel ''Hábel''; ar, هابيل, Hābīl is a Biblical figure in the Book of Genesis within Abrahamic religions. He was the younger brother of Cain, and the younger son of Adam and Eve, the first couple in Biblical history. He was a shepherd who offered his firstborn flock up to God as an offering. God accepted his offering but not his brother's. Cain then killed Abel out of jealousy. According to Genesis, this was the first murder in the history of mankind. Manoel Soto
Manoel Soto Ferreiro (6 April 1944 – 27 November 2019) was a Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) politician. He was the first democratically elected mayor of Vigo in Galicia from 1979 to 1991. Biography Born in Ourense, Soto was a founder of the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdeG). In the first democratic local elections in April 1979, his party came second to the Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD) but governed through a coalition with three other left-wing parties, making him mayor. In the 1980s, Soto reformed the industrial city with new sculptures and projects, such as renovation of the Balaídos stadium for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He sympathised with the '' Movida viguesa'' youth music and arts movement during the decade. Corina Porro Martínez
María Corina Porro Martínez (born 1 December 1953) is a Spanish politician. She was a member of the Vigo local government with the Galician People's Party between 1995 and 1999. She was Chief Director of Social Services between 1999 and 2001. She became a deputy in the Parliament of Galicia and Councillor of Social Services in the 2002-2003 period. In 2003 Corina Porro was elected mayor of Vigo in 2003 after a censure motion against the socialist Ventura Pérez Mariño approved by 10 members from Galician People's Party and seven from Bloque Nacionalista Galego and rejected by eight members of Socialists' Party of Galicia and two from Progresistas Vigueses. Ventura Pérez Mariño
Ventura José Pérez Mariño (29 December 1948 – 14 February 2024) was a Spanish judge and Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) politician. He was a member of the Congress of Deputies from 1993 to 1995, and a city councillor in Vigo from 2003 to 2005, serving as mayor for the first few weeks of his tenure. Biography Early life and education Ventura José Pérez Mariño was born on 29 December 1948, in Vigo. He studied with the Jesuits and then at ICADE, graduating with a law and business administration degree from the University of Deusto. Legal and political career Pérez Mariño was a judge in the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid. He oversaw such cases as those of the ETA militant Josu Urrutikoetxea, and of Manuel Charlín, head of the Los Charlines drug trafficking family. Bloque Nacionalista Galego
The Galician Nationalist Bloc ( gl, Bloque Nacionalista Galego, BNG ) is a political alliance of left-wing Galician nationalist parties. It is self-defined as a "patriotic front". Formed in 1982, under the guidance of historical leader Xosé Manuel Beiras, the BNG calls for further devolution of powers to the Parliament of Galicia and the official and unambiguous recognition of Galicia as a nation. Galician People's Party
The Galician People's Party ( gl, Partido Popular Galego, gl, Partido Popular Gallego, PPG) was a Galician political party in the first years of the Spanish democracy. History It was founded in July 1976 as a result of the union of the Democratic Union of Galicia, led by Xaime Illa Couto, and the Galician Democratic Left, led by Fernando García Agudín. They participated in the activities of the Christian Democratic Team of the Spanish State, but they didn't enter it. In the general elections of 1977 it allied with the Galician Social Democratic Party. It disappeared in 1979. Some of its members joined the Partido Galeguista and others the Democratic Center Union. Emma González Bermello
Emma Rosa González Bermello (21 September 1931 – 14 January 2014) was a Spanish politician. She was the first woman to be mayor of Vigo or any other place in Galicia, serving for 15 days in January 1976 and again from 1978 to 1979. She was also one of the first three women in the Parliament of Galicia, where she served from 1981 to 1989 and represented three parties. Biography Born in Ourense, González moved to the fellow Galician city of Vigo at the age of three. She and her husband Jesús owned the electronics store Baladrón. The family became prominent in local politics in the final years of Francoist Spain, being nicknamed the "Baladrón clan" in allusion to the Kennedy family in the United States.
