Roscoe Conkling
Roscoe Conkling (October 30, 1829April 18, 1888) was an American lawyer and Republican Party (United States), Republican politician who represented New York (state), New York in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. He is remembered today as the leader of the Republican Stalwart (politics), Stalwart faction and a dominant figure in the Senate during the 1870s. Conkling, who was Temperance movement, temperate and detested tobacco, was known for his physical condition, maintained through regular exercise and boxing, an unusual devotion for his time. While in the U.S. House, Conkling served as bodyguard for abolitionist Representative Thaddeus Stevens and fully supported the Union (American Civil War), Union during the American Civil War. Francis Marion Burdick LL.D. (1845–1920) was an American legal scholar. Personal life Francis Marion Burdick was born at De Ruyter, New York on August 1, 1845. His parents were Albert G. Burdick and Eunetia Yale Wheeler Burdick. On June 8, 1875, he married Sarah Underhill Kellogg, the daughter of Charles C. Kellogg, who founded a Utica lumber company. Francis and Sarah were Presbyterians. They had a son, Charles (1883–1940), who graduated from Columbia Law School in 1908 and became a professor of law at Cornell. They also had three daughters: Anna (1877–1960), Katherine (1879–1963), and Flora. On June 3, 1920, Francis Marion Burdick died at his home in De Ruyter while working in his garden. He had remained academically active up to his death. John Butterfield (November 18, 1801 – November 14, 1869) was a transportation pioneer in the mid-19th century in the American Northwest and Southwest. He founded many companies, including American Express which is still in operation today. The Butterfield Overland Mail Company was the longest stagecoach line in the world. The line operated from 1858 to 1861 on the Southern Overland Trail and established an important connection between the new state of California and the government and economy of the contiguous eastern states.
