This is a list of mayors of Saskatoon, the largest city in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The mayor leads Saskatoon City Council, the city's governing body. The 28th and current mayor is Charlie Clark, who was first elected in 2016. Background Saskatoon received a town charter in July 1903, which led to the inception of a town council. In May 1906 the Town of Saskatoon merged with the settlements of Riversdale and Nutana, and the City of Saskatoon was incorporated. Until 1954, Saskatoon's mayor was elected annually. From 1954 until 1970, the mayor was elected biannually. The term was then extended to three years, and in 2012 it was extended to four. From 1920 to 1926 and from 1938 to 1942, Saskatoon mayors were elected using Instant-runoff voting. All other times First past the post was used. Saskatoon () is the largest city in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It straddles a bend in the South Saskatchewan River in the central region of the province. Russell Wilson (Canadian Politician)
Russell Wilson (July 1864 – November 13, 1936) was a politician and merchant in Saskatchewan, Canada. He had served as a member of the Saskatoons city council and went on to become the city's mayor in 1926. Wilson was born near Almonte, Ontario to Robert and Jane Wilson. He received his education in Carleton County and, with his family, homesteaded on Beaver Creek near Hanley in 1883. The family had bought 190 acres of land in Beaver Creek. After leaving home, Wilson worked in Moose Jaw, as guide for the transport department during the North-West Rebellion and served as a railway contractor along with his brother from 1884 to 1885. Wilson started merchandising in dray in 1883. From 1893 to 1896, he traded in food and livery along with H. McDonald. Jim Maddin
Jim Maddin is a Canadian politician who was Mayor of Saskatoon, the largest city in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan from 2000 to 2003, and mayor of the town of Asquith in west central Saskatchewan from 2009 to 2015. Early life and career Maddin was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, and moved between Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta as he grew up. He graduated from high school in Kerrobert in 1966. When he was 14 he received a brochure about joining the RCMP, and he ultimately pursued a career in policing. He joined the Saskatoon Police Service in 1972 and remained for 25 years, reaching the rank of superintendent in charge of the human resources division. He accepted early retirement in 1997, following budget cutbacks that he argued were political in nature. Henry Dayday
Henry Dayday (born October 8, 1939) is a Canadian politician who served as the mayor of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1988 to 2000. He was elected mayor four times, tied for the most since mayoral terms were extended beyond one year in 1954, although he is tied as the second longest-serving mayor in the city's history as the term limit for mayor was extended from three to four years in 2012. However, Dayday did serve the longest overall stint on City Council at 24 consecutive years. Early life and education Dayday was raised on a farm near the town of Bankend, Saskatchewan. He moved to Saskatoon and earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, including a bacherlor's of education. Bert Sears
Herbert Sydney Sears (1907 – December 23, 1993) was a British-born politician in Saskatchewan, Canada. He served as mayor of Saskatoon from 1972 to 1976. Early life Sears was born in Bromley in 1907. His father emigrated to Saskatoon in 1910 where he ran a fish and chip shop, but at the start of the First World War he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. On December 25, 1917, Sears and his mother reached Saskatoon where they were later reunited with his father. After completing his schooling, Sears began working at a bakery. There he became a member of a union, beginning a long-term commitment to the labour movement in Saskatoon. Sears was employed with Federated Co-op from 1944 until his retirement in 1967; he became regional warehouse manager in 1949. Sidney Labe Buckwold, (November 3, 1916 – June 27, 2001) was a Canadian politician, soldier, and businessman. Buckwold served as a Senator for 20 years and as mayor of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, for 11 years in two separate tenures. Early life Buckwold was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Harry Buckwold and Dorothy Friedman in 1916. The family moved to Saskatoon in 1925, where Buckwold attended Buena Vista School, Nutana Collegiate and the University of Saskatchewan, before going to Montreal and receiving a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University. Carl Niderost (June 19, 1898 – January 15, 1942) was an English-born lawyer and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He served as mayor of Saskatoon from 1939 to 1940. Robert Mitford Pinder
Robert Mitford Pinder (December 14, 1890 – August 1, 1946) was a pharmacist, entrepreneur and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Saskatoon City in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1938 to 1944 as a Liberal. Pinder was mayor of Saskatoon from 1935 to 1938. Born in North Toronto, Ontario, the son of Abraham Pinder and Polly Savage – who came to Canada from Yorkshire, England – he was educated in Elgin, Manitoba and at the Pharmacy College in Winnipeg; then moved to Saskatoon in 1914. He worked for the Saskatoon Drug and Stationery Company, eventually becoming part owner and then sole owner. In 1916, Pinder married Helen Rose. John Sproule Mills (1887 – October 28, 1972) was an Irish-born politician in Canada. He served as mayor of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1933 to 1934 and from 1949 to 1953. He was born in Derry, County Londonderry, Ireland and was educated at the National University of Ireland, at the University of London, at Columbia University in New York City and at McMaster University. Mills taught school in Montreal for four years and then moved to Saskatoon, where he was principal of King Edward School for eight years and of the Saskatoon Normal School for eleven years. He had also been the president of the Saskatoon Boys Band. In 1940, Mills moved to Moose Jaw to teach at the Normal School there, later returning to Saskatoon.
