Oshawa
Oshawa ( , also ; 2021 population 175,383; CMA 415,311) is a city in Ontario, Canada, on the Lake Ontario shoreline. It lies in Southern Ontario, approximately east of Downtown Toronto. It is commonly viewed as the eastern anchor of the Greater Toronto Area and of the Golden Horseshoe. It is the largest municipality in the Regional Municipality of Durham. The name Oshawa originates from the Ojibwa term ''aazhawe'', meaning "the crossing place" or just "a cross". Founded in 1876 as the McLaughlin Carriage Company by Robert McLaughlin, and then McLaughlin Motors Ltd by his son, Sam, General Motors of Canada's headquarters are located in the city. William Henry Gibbs
William Henry Gibbs (November 29, 1823 – November 5, 1902) was a manufacturer and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Ontario North in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1872 to 1874 and from 1876 to 1878. He was born in Terrebonne, Lower Canada, the son of Thomas Gibbs and Caroline Tate who had gone there from Devonshire, England in 1819. He was educated in Montreal. With his brother Thomas Nicholson, he built a grist mill south of Oshawa. The two brothers built other mills and also operated a distillery and a tannery. Gibbs was also president of the Oshawa Cabinet Company. He served on the town council for Oshawa, also serving as reeve and later mayor. He was also deputy reeve for Whitby Township and warden for Ontario County. In 1845, he married Frances Colton. Gibbs was defeated by Adam Gordon for the federal seat in 1874. Frederick Luther Fowke
Frederick Luther Fowke (May 27, 1857 – August 25, 1939) was a merchant and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Ontario South in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1911 as a Liberal. He was born in Harmony, East Whitby, Canada West, the son of Job Wilson Fowke and Adeline Perkins Stone, the daughter of Marshall B. Stone, a Minnesota senator. Fowke operated a general store and sold grain and coal. Robert McLaughlin (industrialist)
Robert McLaughlin (November 16, 1836 – November 23, 1921) was a Canadian industrialist and businessman. He founded McLaughlin Carriage then McLaughlin Motor Car Company which later became part of General Motors Canada. Life and career McLaughlin was born in Cavan Township, Upper Canada in 1836, the son of an Irish immigrant, John McLaughlin. He moved to Darlington Township with his family in 1837. He married Mary Smith in 1864,"The McLaughlins - Sleighs, Buggys, Cars and Ginger Ale". Thomas Erlin Kaiser
Thomas Erlin Kaiser (16 February 1863 – 29 February 1940) was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Edgely, York County, Canada West and became an author and physician. Kaiser attended Weston High School then the University of Toronto where in 1890 he attained his Doctor of Medicine degree. He served on municipal boards in areas such as libraries, education, planning and water. In 1912, he became a member of the Ontario Board of Health. In 1916, Kaiser was made an honorary major of the Canadian Militia. In 1907 and 1908, Kaiser was mayor of Oshawa. As an author, his books include ''Historic sketches of Oshawa'' (1921) and ''A history of the medical profession of the county of Ontario'' (1934). He was first elected to Parliament at the Ontario riding in the 1925 general election then re-elected there in 1926. Gordon Daniel Conant
Gordon Daniel Conant (January 11, 1885 – January 2, 1953) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and the 12th premier of Ontario, from 1942 to 1943. Personal life Born in Cedar Dale, East Whitby Township (now part of the City of Oshawa) in Ontario, Conant was a member of one of Oshawa's early European families. He was educated at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1912. He practiced law in Oshawa. In 1913 he married Verna Conant (née Smith), daughter of E. D. Smith. Together they had three children. Outside politics, Conant served as president of Oshawa General Hospital, Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and South Ontario Canadian Club. In 1933, he was made a King's Counsel. From 1943 to 1951, he was a Master of the Supreme Court of Ontario. In 1944, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Toronto. Conant died on January 2, 1953. Michael Starr, (born Michael Starchewsky; November 14, 1910 – March 16, 2000) was a Canadian politician and the first Canadian cabinet minister of Ukrainian descent, his parents having emigrated from Halychyna ( Galicia), then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now Western Ukraine. Life and career Born in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Starr was an alderman for the Oshawa City Council from 1944 to 1949. From 1949 to 1952, he was the mayor of Oshawa. Allan Pilkey (born ) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as alderman and mayor of Oshawa, and was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995. Background Pilkey was born in Oshawa, Ontario. John G. Henry (born July 30, 1960) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was mayor of Oshawa from 2010 to 2018 and is currently chair of the Regional Municipality of Durham.
