This is list of mayors of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Guelph was founded April 23, 1879 and incorporated as a town on January 1, 1856. Guelph officially became a city on April 23, 1879. Chain of office Since 1967, each sitting mayor has been honoured and presented with the chain of office A livery collar or chain of office is a collar or heavy chain, usually of gold, worn as insignia of office or a mark of fealty or other association in Europe from the Middle Ages onwards. One of the oldest and best-known livery collars is the Col ... to wear during their term of office. It is to be worn at city council meetings and other formal functions. The chain contains 17 shields engraved with subjects of local significance. The chain is also engraved with the names of the mayors who have worn it since it was commissioned. George Herod
Doctor George Samuel Herod (May 26, 1827 – January 25, 1899) was an English-born physician and politician. He served as mayor of Guelph from 1869 to 1870. He was born in Lancashire and was educated in Mansfield and Birmingham. Herod came to Guelph in 1840. He studied medicine with two physicians there and then continued his studies at King's College, Toronto and was admitted to practice in 1847. He became a physician at the Emigrant Hospital in Hamilton and set up practice in Georgetown a year later. In 1854, Herod returned to Guelph and entered practice with Dr. William Clarke. Cam Guthrie
Cam Guthrie is a Canadian politician, currently serving as the Mayor of Guelph, Ontario since December 1, 2014. In the October 24, 2022 municipal election, he was re-elected mayor for a third term. Personal life Guthrie is a third-generation Guelphite born into a family with Scottish immigrant roots. His family includes a number of independent businessmen. Before entering politics, Guthrie was an insurance agent. Karen Farbridge
Karen J. Farbridge is a Canadian politician, the former Mayor and a former City Councillor of the city of Guelph, Ontario. Personal life Farbridge was born in Woking, England the oldest of three siblings. When she was three years old she moved to Canada with her family for her father's work. Her father, Joseph Farbridge, was an aeronautical engineer who moved to Canada to work with de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. A resident of Guelph since 1979, Farbridge has an MSc and PhD in zoology from the University of Guelph. Early career Karen Farbridge worked for the Ontario Public Interest Research Group in Guelph for 10 years prior to being elected as Mayor of Guelph in 2000. Norm Jary
Norman Willard Jary (April 8, 1929–January 8, 2021) was a Canadian politician and broadcaster who served as Mayor of Guelph 1970 from 1985. He is the longest serving mayor in Guelph’s history. Outside of politics, Jary served as the news and sports director of CJOY and had a one year stint as the play-by-play announcer of the New York Rangers. Early life Jary was born on April 8, 1929 in Toronto. He graduated from Ryerson University’s Academy of Radio and Television Arts. In 1951 he joined CJCS-FM in Stratford, Ontario. In 1954 he was hired by CJOY as sports director and hockey play-by-play announcer. He eventually took on the role of news director as well. During his tenure at CJOY, he called games for the Guelph Biltmores, Guelph Royals, Guelph CMC’s/Mad Hatters/Platers, and Guelph Regals. William Ernest Hamilton
William Ernest Hamilton (March 15, 1902 – June 8, 1985) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1945 to 1955 who represented the Guelph area riding of Wellington South. He was a cabinet minister in the government of Leslie Frost. Background He was born in Guelph, Ontario and studied at Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute and the Ontario Agricultural College. Hamilton began work at a bank and then worked as a salesman at a soap company before taking over the operation of his father's Sun Life Insurance agency. He married Jean Irene Clark in 1928. He served as president of the local YMCA from 1929 to 1930. Hamilton also served as president of the Guelph Board of Trade. Samuel Carter (Canadian Politician)
Samuel Carter (December 8, 1859 – June 16, 1944) was an Ontario manufacturer and political figure. He represented Wellington South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1914 to 1919 as a Liberal-Prohibitionist member when he ran as an independent Liberal and was defeated by Caleb Buckland. He was born in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England, the son of Samuel Carter and came to Ontario in 1882. He owned a knitting mill. Carter served as mayor of Guelph from 1913 to 1914. He was vice-president of the Hydro-Electric Union and chairman of the Heat and Light Commission for the city. He was also president of the Workingman's Co-operative Association of Guelph. Thomas Goldie
Thomas Goldie (July 9, 1850 – February 2, 1892) was a businessman, politician and early promoter of field sports in Ontario. A secretary for the Guelph Maple Leafs, he also served as mayor of Guelph from 1891 to 1892. Biography Early life Born in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of James Goldie and Frances Owen, Goldie moved to Guelph, Ontario with his parents in 1860 where his father established a successful milling business. His grandfather was John Goldie, a botanist originally from Ayrshire, Scotland who toured Upper Canada in the early nineteenth century and settled in Ayr, Ontario in 1844. George Sleeman
George Sleeman (August 1, 1841 – December 16, 1926) was a brewer, a major figure in Canadian baseball, and a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was mayor of Guelph from 1880 to 1882 and from 1905 to 1906. Sleeman was also the president of the Guelph Rifle Association for 20 years, president of the Guelph Turf Club, president of the Guelph Bicycle Club, and, for four years, president of the Ontario Brewing and Malting Association.
