Mauchline, East Ayrshire
Mauchline (; gd, Maghlinn) is a town and civil parish in East Ayrshire, Scotland. In the 2001 census Mauchline had a recorded population of 4,105. It is home to the National Burns Memorial. Location The town lies by the Glasgow and South Western Railway line, east-southeast of Kilmarnock and northeast of Ayr. It is situated on a gentle slope about from the River Ayr, which flows through the south of the parish of Mauchline. In former days Loch Brown was about west of the town, but was drained when the railway line from Kilmarnock was built. Bruntwood Loch, near the old laird's house of that name, was once an important site for waterfowl, but drained for agriculture in the eighteenth century. Ballochmyle Viaduct
The Ballochmyle Viaduct is the tallest extant railway viaduct in Britain. It is high, and carries the railway over the River Ayr near Mauchline and Catrine in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It carries the former Glasgow and South Western Railway line between Glasgow and Carlisle. Designed by John Miller, the viaduct was built in the 1840s for the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway Company. Work commenced on its construction during March 1846; it was built under contract by Ross & Mitchell and William McCandlish was the resident engineer. It is built of local red sandstone and stronger stone sourced from Dundee was used for the arch rings. On completion on 2 March 1848, the viaduct had the largest masonry arch in the world and remains amongst the largest ever been constructed. Kingencleugh Castle
The remains of the old castle of Kingencleugh or KingencloughSalter, p. 48. lies close to east of the town of Mauchline, East Ayrshire, in the old Barony of Mauchline off the A76. The castle is Category B listed. The history of Kingencleugh Castle From the remains, this appears to have been built as a dwelling with defence as a secondary consideration. John Knox is said to have visited it in 1556. Kingencleugh was built as one of several castles built as border markers for the Campbell feus in the area. Kingencleugh latterly became part of the Ballochmyle estate. The present castle was built around 1620 to replace the older fortification that Knox would have known. The castle was abandoned once the new house was built. The Campbells held the property until the end of the 18th century. Ballochmyle Hospital
Ballochmyle House is an 18th-century country house near Catrine in East Ayrshire, Scotland that was the seat of the Alexander of Ballochmyle family. From 1939 to 2000, it was the location of Ballochmyle Hospital operated by NHS Ayrshire and Arran. Following a £5m restoration that began in 2009, it was converted to luxury flats. History Ballochmyle House was designed by Robert Adam and completed in 1760 before being substantially rebuilt to a design by Hew Montgomerie Wardrop with assistance from George Mackie Watson in 1887. It was the home of Wilhelmina Alexander whose lasting fame derives from being Robert Burns's 'The Bonnie Lass o'Ballochmyle' in the song of that title.
