Saint Lucia ( acf, Sent Lisi, french: Sainte-Lucie) is an island country of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean. The island was previously called Iouanalao and later Hewanorra, names given by the native Arawaks and Caribs, two Amerindian peoples. Part of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent (Antilles), Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia
Vieux Fort is a town located near the southernmost point of Saint Lucia, a Caribbean island nation. It is named after a fort that used to watch out towards Saint Vincent towards the south. The population of the town was 4,574 in 2010, while the surrounding district of Vieux Fort has a total population of about 15,132 in 2010. History In the 18th and 19th centuries it was an important centre of the sugar industry in Saint Lucia before that industry declined. During World War II, the Americans constructed an airfield called Beane Army Airfield. After the war it was subsequently expanded to form Hewanorra International Airport. Castries
Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, an island country in the Caribbean. The urban area has a population of approximately 20,000, while the eponymous district has a population of 70,000, as at May 2013. The city stretches over an area of . Castries is on a flood plain and is built on reclaimed land. It houses the seat of government and the head offices of many foreign and local businesses. The city is laid out in a grid pattern. Vigie is part of Castries, Saint Lucia. The French established a village at the base of Vigie Hill in 1745, and a military headquarters on Vigie Height. Three forts were built, Choc Fort facing Choc Bay, Fort St. Victor at the entrance to Grand Carénage Bay (Castries Harbor), and Fort Montagu overlooking Petit Carénage Bay. George F. L. Charles Airport, one of Saint Lucia's two airports, is located in this part, as well as one of Saint Lucia's two lighthouses.
