List Of Generals Of The Lithuanian Army
List of generals of the Lithuanian Army includes people that were awarded the rank of general by the independent Republic of Lithuania in 1918–40 or since 1990. Interwar There were 54 generals awarded the rank in interwar Lithuania. Seven of them earned their rank in foreign military, i.e. Imperial Russian Army, Russian White Army, and British Army. Four men earned rank of general in foreign military and served in the Lithuanian Army, but were not awarded the rank of general in Lithuania and are therefore not included in the list below. On September 13, 1919, Lithuania established two ranks of generals – lieutenant general and general. On December 11, 1936, these ranks were changed to brigadier general, divisional general, and general. Jonas Černius
Jonas Černius (6 January 1898, Kupiškis, Kovno Governorate – 3 July 1977, Los Angeles) was a Lithuanian general and Prime Minister. When Lithuania declared independence in 1918, he joined the army as a volunteer and participated in the Freedom Wars. He was one of the first graduates from the War School of Kaunas, but he continued to study military engineering in Brussels (1929) and Paris (1932). On his return to Lithuania, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed as chief of the military technical staff. In 1934 he became a colonel. In 1935 he was promoted to brigadier general and Chief of the General Staff. From 30 March to 22 November 1939 he was the Prime Minister and led the 20th cabinet. After resigning as prime minister, he was promoted to major general and put in command of the 1st Division. Maksimas Katche
Maksimas Katche (german: Wilhelm Johannes Arwed Max Kattchée, russian: Макс Арведович Катхе, – 10 June 1933), was a Russian colonel and Lithuanian lieutenant general. In 1899, he graduated from an infantry school and served in the Imperial Russian Army. He fought in the Russo-Japanese War and in World War I, attaining the rank of colonel in 1916. In April 1919, he joined the Lithuanian Army and fought successfully against Bolsheviks and Bermontians in the Lithuanian Wars of Independence. Katche chaired the Lithuanian delegation that negotiated and signed the Suwałki Agreement on 7 October 1920 with Poland. He was twice appointed to Chief of the General Staff of the Lithuanian Army and was promoted to lieutenant general in March 1920. In early 1921, he organised the Higher Officers' Courses and was their first chief. He retired from active duty in October 1922 and died in Biržai in 1933. Antanas Gustaitis
Antanas Gustaitis (March 26, 1898 – October 16, 1941) was an officer in the Lithuanian Armed Forces who modernized the Lithuanian Air Force, which at that time was part of the Lithuanian Army. He was the architect or aeronautical engineer who undertook the task to design and construct several military trainers and reconnaissance aircraft. Gustaitis was born in the village of Obelinė, in Javaravas county, in the Marijampolė district. He attended high school in Yaroslavl, and from there studied at the Institute of Engineering and School of Artillery in Petrograd. After joining the Lithuanian Army in 1919, he graduated from the School of Military Aviation as a Junior Lieutenant in 1920. Later that year, he saw action in the Polish-Lithuanian War.
